What Members Thought

I had this on my TBR shelf for many years before I read this year. It took 4-5 attempts to get into the groove with all of MANY characters with identical or similar sounding names. Once I located a family tree of the seven generations, things went more smoothly. I really enjoyed the humor and storytelling about the human race!

My second reading (for university this time), and I'm afraid I have to knock it down from 4 stars to 3. I can't honestly say that I "really like" this book. I gave it 4 stars the first time I read it because it was my introduction to magical realism and I was impressed by the intricately-woven plot, the stunning prose, and the unblinking weirdness of it all. But on second reading, I just can't get past the gross content. (view spoiler)

I found this a bit of a struggle to be honest. I was initially daunted by the perplexing family tree in the front and 400 pages of small, close-set type later I'm not much wiser. It got better towards the end but this wasn't as "magically real" as Love In The Time of Cholera or any of the other Gabriel García Márquez novels I've read.
