There has been much discussion of ways to include more World Lit in 2015. Here's a teaser challenge for 2014 of possible things to come.

Dates: October 1 - December 31, 2014
Mission: Read one book from each of the seven continents. Author, setting, and original language must be from the country you choose in each continent.

North America
-The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was set in The USA and written by an American author, writing in English.
-Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery was set in Canada, written by a Canadian author, writing in English.

South America
-One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcí­a Márquez was set in Colombia, by a Colombian author, writing in Spanish.
-The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende was set in Chile, written by a Chilean novelist, writing in Spanish.

Europe:
-The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo was set in France, by a French novelist, writing in French.
-The Neverending Story by Michael Ende was set in Germany (and Fantastica), written by a German author, in German.
-The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson was set in Sweden, written by a Swedish writer, writing in Swedish.

Africa:
-Arabian Nights and Days by Naguib Mahfouz (Egyptian Arabic)
-The Day the Swallows Spoke by Dalene Matthee (Afrikaans)

Asia:
-Lust, Caution: The Story by Eileen Chang was set in China, by a Chinese author, writing in Chinese
-The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami was set in Japan, by a Japanese novelist, writing in Japanese
- The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky was set in Russia, written in Russian, by a Russian novelist.

- Australia/Oceania:
-The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough was set in Australia, written by an Australian novelist.
-The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera was set in New Zealand, written by a New Zealander.

Bonus - The Seven Seas:
-Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian
-Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville

One of my thoughts is to run this mini-challenge twice a year, depending on the outcome of the Challenge Poll, opening on October 1st.

Bah! Especially since one if them is Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, originally written in English, THEN translated into Chinese!

Good Old 1Q84! It's going to get used in about 3 different mini-challenges. Thank goodness it has tKen so long to finish!
