This is a wonderfully touching story. Be prepared to cry! I love Zusak's use of death as the narrator, yet he does it in a way that is very nuanced and not at all what you would think Death would sound like. It's one of those stories that sticks with you long after you've read it. ...more

Highly recommend this book. Great story, wonderful characters. Very unique -- the narrator is Death. Liesel is a foster child who loves and steals books in Nazi Germany. This line from the book sums it up: "It's just a small story, really, about, among other things:
- A girl
- Some words
- An accordionist
- Some fanatical Germans
- A Jewish fistfighter
- And quite a lot of thievery."
