For quite a way into this story, I felt a - je ne sais quois, something dark and sinister - unsettling, even - and it left me feeling uneasy. But it all wrapped up so well in the end. Liesel steals her first book at the funeral of her brother, it has fallen out of the pocket of the young gravedigging apprentice and is known as The Gravedigger's handbook. Do you occasionally, when you have completed a good book, have that almost be refit feeling of grief because you have read it and you wanted it to go on and on forever? I get that feeling when I read books that move me but I can honestly say that in all my years of being a prolific reader no book has sucked me into it's pages and absorbed me in its world quite like this one.
