Protagonist Linus Baker is an employee of DICOMY, the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He is a case worker sent by “Extremely Upper Management” to make sure the Marsyas Island Orphanage is following the rules. These special magical children are viewed by the local village as being unruly and dangerous. Linus is diligent about rule-following and is being used by DICOMY to produce the outcome they desire. What a delightful, charming story! I was not expecting this at all. I'm not a big fan of fantasy, so I wasn't expecting to really even like it, but I absolutely loved it! I listened to it and the narration was excellent and totally captivating. The characters are so whimsical and endearing. I can't really say who I liked the best, they were all so well developed and jumped off the pages and into my heart! This is not a book I would typically pick to read. It was magical and creative though, so a really lovely story. The whimsical tale and the importance of acceptance and kindness really touched me.

I had the book and the 🎧 and for this story, listening to part of the book really added to it. The narration was done very well and brought each of the characters to life more.

This wonderful book will stick with me. I loved the quirky characters and the magical elements. It had a deeper level in exploring how children can be demonized and feared when they show distress in various ways after rough beginnings in life. There was so much love and wisdom in this book. The audio version was done really well. I look forward to exploring the author’s other books.
