February 2024 Word of the Month: Celebrating 200 Years of RSPCA / CHICKENSNearly 200 years ago a small group of people, including William Wilberforce (perhaps better known for the movement that abolished slavery), met in a London coffee shop and shared their determination to change animals' lives. They created a society that became the RSPCA, sparking a movement that spread around the world.
Since 1824, the RSPCA has worked to prevent cruelty, promote kindness towards, and reduce the suffering of animals. Their vision is of a caring world in which all animals are respected and treated with compassion.
The RSPCA's 200th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the organisation's founding - including the idea that improving animal wellbeing is part of a broader increase of social consciousness against cruelty, suffering, and exploitation.
One of their key issues is raising the bar for farm animals, preventing cruelty to the animals we depend on for survival, & so today we celebrate the humble CHICKEN. The chicken (Gallus domesticus) is a domesticated species that arose from some wild species of Asian junglefowl.
Rooster and cock are terms for adult male birds, a younger male may be called a cockerel, & one that has been castrated is a capon. An adult female bird is called a hen, and an immature female is a pullet. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming both their meat (broilers) and eggs (layers), or as pets. They are also bred for cockfighting, which is still practiced in some places.
There are hundreds of chicken breeds around the world, including bantams. A bantam is any small variety of fowl, usually of chicken or duck. Most large chicken breeds have a bantam counterpart, which is much smaller than the standard-sized fowl, but otherwise similar in most or all respects. A true bantam chicken is naturally small and has no large counterpart.
To support this wonderful domestic animal, look for the RSPCA Approved logo – or the equivalent animal welfare logo in your country.
