Just tell me when, and I'll bring 'em over.....

The idea for this came to me the other day when Narzain and I were out having ice-cream. While we were enjoying our Mitchell's (yes, Vulture I know....they will ship it too you though. They pack it in dry ice.) Anyway, I was looking out the window, and saw a young man get out of the back of a car while reading his book. He read it while walking into the store and after entering.
He made me think back to when I was in high school, and how I would read while walking home....come to think of it I read between classes, while walking in the hall, not on the stairs of course...
It made me wonder, am I the only one of us who did or still does that? Do you get so wrapped up in a book that you just simply don't put it down to do other things, like get something to drink or eat? I was that way with Harry Potter 5-7. I didn't start Harry until book 3 came out, and was hoooked right away. I got book 4 the day it came out, but I had to go to work the next day, so I had to finish it the next day. 5-7 I read in one day, and I walked around with them, ate one handed, and refused to answer the phone....
Am I the only one who gets this way with a book, or do others do this too? It doesn't have to be a new book,it can be an old friend that I just get immersed in and forget things, like eating....
What have you all done, or forgotten while reading?
Have you ever gotten so involved in a book that you forget reality? Being jarred back into it by a ringing phone or pet?
What do you think?

I finished it last night, so wherever y'all are is fine to keep the discussion going. So what does everyone think of Butcher? How many plan to keep going with the series?

I felt the same way about King after "The Tommyknockers". I got so bored, I stared counting how many times he used the f-word and all it's many variations. Butcher writes to write, even his newer stuff is still as good as his first. The fast pace stays put and his descriptions stay on target. I an not a prude, but I do like the fact that is someone swears, it's appropriate to the situation and not for the sake of stretching the story. I will return to Butcher this afternoon, since I put it down to read 3 other books the last 4 days.

O.K. so now that most of you have read the first 2 chapters or so, what do you think of Butcher so far? (I know I am a little biased since I have read every book this guy has written, including his fantasy series that is AWSOME!) I like how he can evoke an image with very few words. You know what someone looks like and who they are with very little description. He doesn't describe every item in a room or go into gory detail. He gives you what you need and let's you fill in the blanks with your own imagination.

I'm on chapter 10, but I left it at Narzains' so that I won't read anymore until I am supposed to. It has been a while since I have re-read these, so I am rembering things that I forgot.

I re-read the first 4 last night,and I kept going....sorry. I can keep on subject though. Promise!

My train of thought de-rails at the station....of course years ago, my mind wandered off the beaten path and when I went to look for it, I tripped on memory lane, which caused me to lose my marbles...I haven't been the same since......
Narzain doesn't have his either, so just let me know when y'all have your copies. I'll start when the majority starts since I already own the books.

Thanks for clarifying :) I appreciate it.

Yes, this is book 1 of a series, and they are sooooo good! Please, beging when ready. I own all the books (except the newest.....*sigh*). I figure to go a few chapters at a time, so everyone can keep up.

I agree that seeing only boobs all the time (must be why television is called "the boob tube") gets old pretty quick. I did, however, feel that this was done better than the Dresden files, where they even changed the name of one of the characters (what's up with that?!) and I felt that chemistry was lacking. Something I did not feel with the Trueblood cast.
By the way, I'm not up on chat speak or texting short hand (hence the request not to use it here in the forums incase others aren't either) so what does "jmho" mean?

I have to update this with the discovery of HBO's adadaptation of the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. It was pretty decent. With a few small exceptions (VERY minor) to the casting, I felt all the characters were cast dead on (ex-cuse my partial pun). I did, however, take exception to the way they chose to move the story line along. I have read all the books, and I do not recall things going the way they had them go, in any of the books. That said, the way it went was kept within the confines of her world. I am not a prude, but I did not care for the use of the f-word or the prolifferation of it, as Charlaine does not use a lot of swearing in her books. (I know that some of my friends who know me off-site know that I do use that word, but not as if it is going extinct.) I also did not care for the way that the story line was turned into a semi-porno either. Yes, there are sex scenes in the books, but not that graphic not with those characters....
O.K., that all said, will I watch the new season when it comes out on DVD, most likely. For the most part it is well done, and I would like to see where they take it from here.

This idea was inspired by something said by another member in another thread. She said that her reading choices can be influnenced by her mood. I know that sometimes this is also true for me as well. I find that sometimes, like food, I get on a kick where I will read nothing but old series's that I own and will read them start to finish, and then won't touch them for a while. Other times, a book sounded good, and starts well, but I just can't seem to concentrate at the time on it and I may put it aside or take it back out from the library at a later time. Does this happen to the rest of you too?
I know that I have asked what we read and when in conjuction with weather and time of the year, but do you also find you read based on your mood?

I read several at a time. Sometimes it is 1 chapter from each, round-robin style, others are which room I am in. Lately, because I'm not working, I can read about a book day. When I'm working, it takes about 3 days. If I am reading manga, I can average several in a few hours depending on how involved they are with dialog verus action.

To answer your first question, yes, I have already read the other books in the series, but I have no problem re-reading them when we decide to read them for a group read. Just let me know when you wish to contiue. Secondly, if you can forgive my spelling, we'll be fine. As far as books go, I quote my boyfriend "Everyone's mileage may vary". I have loved a lot of books that others didn't and vice versa. As long as we can all agree to keep this friendly and not turn this into verbal boxing matches, I think we will do just fine.
As for seperate threads, that is what I had in mind. I don't intend to set time limits on group reads as each person will read at their own pace. I read faster than most of my friends, so I read books first then pass them on. I am also taking into consideration that some will have to wait for library editions to be made available.
We can do 1 a month, or just carry on at our pace of what we see fit. If you would like a chance to read some of your new library books, please, by all means do so. I would like a chance to finish what I just got so I have time to re-read our next book,"Storm Front" by Jim Butcher. Just let me know when you get your copy and we'll take it a few chapters at a time.
P.S.There are omnibus editions with all 5 books available.

I can't wait for you to finish it so I can get your opinion on the whole book. (By the by, love the Hobbit, read the other 3, but they didn't do much for me. Don't know why, love the genre, just not those. Oh, well that's another discussion on it's own. But, sticking to the subject at hand, let me know if you want to read the other 4 books in the Hitchikers series (not right away, but as future selections.)

I love how Arthur stomps through the house and how he sees the bulldozers and then conects the word "yellow" long before he actually realizes what is going on.
I use "beware of the leopard" to describe what I feel should have been something discused out in the open and not hidden away "in a dis-used lavatory".
I agree with your observation re: Adams' style of "you get the point" without his being wordy *cough* Tolkien *cough*.

I rembered a book that was made into a movie and one I just saw that were adapted pretty well. One I forgot about and one I just watched this weekend. First, "The Princess Bride" was pretty well done.
The second one, and this surprised me based on the DVD box's description, "The Tale of Despereaux" which follows the book at about a 90% rate of accuracy. The stuff they added worked though. I was very pleased.

I read a lot of psychology books when I was younger (and I mean like at age 12/13)and these were college level text books and clinical texts. I also like books that use your own psyche against you while you read and make you question your views.

This was also brought up to me in an email, and I think it is a marvelous idea. I'm all for it, so what do the rest of you think?
My pick Jim Butcher's "Storm Front" the first Harry Dresden novel.
