"A Broad Look at the Fiction and Nonfiction of William Vollmann"

"Taken as a whole, the works of William T. Vollman are frequently contradictory. He’s a writer drawn to the lives of outsiders who’s also written about some of the most essential and overarching subjects facing society. His bibliography encompasses both transgressive, unsettling writing and deeply accessible forays into historical and contemporary issues."

Very nice! Good to have you around these parts then. Did you pretty much read his books as they were published?
82746 Trying for an update on this. The pub'r's site now says "This item is not yet published. It is available for pre-orders and will ship on 01 January 2099" which is a little ways off.

BUT, there is a current mention of it as still a live project (work in...) :: "Michael has reviewed for The Observer and the Times Literary Supplement and has been commissioned by Manchester University Press to write a monograph on William T. Vollmann, one of the most critically acclaimed and prolific living U.S. authors" which is a bio for an event in London coming up in April.

82746 Heads=up for the folks in CA. The event at Kepler's Books will be a ticketed thing. I know it sucks for the Vollmanniac, but it should mean they are planning to draw in a wide audience which is appropriate given the subject matter of the book.

I expect his other readings might be more densely attended than his previous readings. Arrive early (and often!)

Thanks for looking into that. Let us know when you hear more.

82746 Aiden wrote: "I read and loved Europe Central, my first Vollmann novel. I own Imperial and Last Stories. Which should I read first?"

Two very different. Imperial is some of his best non-fic. Last Stories is when he rather lets his fancy free ; a good contrast to the historical constraints of EC (it also nicely exemplifies his globe=trotting). In short, both good choices.

It's working for me. And there is a dreamy thing to it too ; shifting perspective is pretty spot=on.

Not old news at all! Thanks for keeping us posted!

Very nice to see him on the East Coast again.
82746 I finally got a hardcopy of the Harper's issue. Means I can finally read it ;; thanks for those wonderful gr=angels who made it digitally available to me (and others!).
