80482 Nice post Mary. Im fascinated with the use of color in fiction.

I think Clint mentioned REH had his own flare with it (recently mentioned in the groupreads thread).

Anyway, do tell us how you plan to use it... or a favorite example of another author.

80482 I like those inspirations Jack Vance's Cugel Saga and Michael Shea's In Yana, the Touch of Undying

Cugel Saga (The Dying Earth, #3) by Jack Vance In Yana, the Touch of Undying by Michael Shea

Something as hugely consequential as choosing a name may warant a full-scale poll on these options.

80482 Are you indicating ing your moniker should be “big foot”?

80482 All,

As 2019 wraps up, one of our esteemed moderators, Jack (aka Bran Jack Morn) will phase out his role. He will still linger in the shadows, as Picts are wont to do.

I really appreciate Jack helping out for the past few years. Even though this group is very, very civil, we've had a few occasions in which we had to rein in an overzealous seller or rogue unprofessional. Anyway, you rock Jack.

Stepping up is one of the top readers & commenters of this Sword & Sorcery group: Joseph. He doesn't have a code name yet (look on the upper right of the group homepage and you'll see the moderators have subtitles).

So to welcome Joseph on board, I suggest folks can chime in here with suggestions. For reference, the group founder Periklis is Fafhred. I am the Gray Mouser.

80482 Book Giveaway by HAJ on reddit... and all he asks for is your S&S inspirations

---> Reddit giveaway link

Blurb from Howard Andrew Jones:

"Upon the Flight of the Queen, the second book in my new Ring-Sworn fantasy trilogy, releases on November 19th from St. Martin’s. With that a little less than one week out, I'm announcing a giveaway. You may remember that book one of this trilogy, For the Killing of Kings, was released earlier this year.

St. Martin's will bestow one hardback copy of book one as well as an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of book two to three interested people who will be chosen at random from entrants into this giveaway.

Since my books are all about a modern take on heroic action and sword-and-sorcery, let me know your favorite sword-and-sorcery heroes, and why you like them. Do so BEFORE November 19th, when I’ll toss your names in an electronic randomiszer and announce three winners...."

80482 Hey Clint, can you expand on REH uses of color that you (and David Smith) mention?

Ortok's development was a nice surprise. So that's a fun spoiler for new folk out there... Ortok is only a secondary character in For the Killing of Kings, but he became an integral part of the good guy's squad. He assumed the role of Warf or Chewbacca, being a humanoid-creature who is a strong guard and has a cool personality.

80482 There are lots of characters in the Ring Sworn, but my favorite is one of the obscure Altenerai (elite warriors/sorcerers akin to Arthur's knights of the round table): Cerai. She is best described as a rogue artist.

Anyone here have a favorite?

80482 Couple of Black Gate articles of interest:

1) Fletcher Vredenburgh interviewed Darian Jones, son of Howard Andrew Jones regarding the making of the trailer: Link to interview

2) I posted a review of Upon the Flight of the Queen (from an ARC; books available for pre-order for a Nov 19th release), which focuses on the trilogy Link to Ring-Sworn Overview. Tidbits of the last entry are revealed too....probably due out 2020.

I think Fletcher Vredenburgh has a review coming out there too in ~2weeks.

80482 Joseph, great idea. I’ll take note of that... but feel welcome to remind me too.

80482 As part of the Kickstarter for Heroic Fantasy Quartley #3, Darrell Schweitzer penned a nice intro about the S&S genre definition.

Does it really need "swords", for instance.

The introduction was made available as an update to backers, but I think it viewable to the public.

Can everyone see/read this?

80482 New S&S by Richard Lee Byers
Arrival (The Paladins Book 1) by Richard Lee Byers

Love this character names, This sounds a bit funny: Pierangelo the fanatic, Gaspard the pragmatist, William the callow novice, Ottomar the politician, Ox the dullard, and the enigmatic Jibril.

BLURB:
Prophecy said holy warriors would travel from another world to save the Western Kingdoms. The men who showed up were rather different.

The priestess Kolinda risked her life to travel deep into the Stained Lands and cast the summoning in the only place where the ritual could be performed. She believed the magic would bring a fellowship of paladins.

Instead it snatched six warriors from the so-called Holy Land of the Earthly Crusades: Pierangelo the fanatic, Gaspard the pragmatist, William the callow novice, Ottomar the politician, Ox the dullard, and the enigmatic Jibril.
Flawed men with no interest in helping a strange land of pagans solve its problems. Enemies who sought to kill one another only moments before.

Now, however, they must band together to escape a country blighted by the foulest sorcery and stalked by unnatural terrors like the parchment men, the One-Eyed Hounds, and the ice witch Lady Coldbreath. It’s a brittle alliance born of necessity, in danger of shattering at any moment and surely not fated to last should the company be lucky enough to reach the Western Kingdoms alive.

The Paladins: Arrival is the start of a new fantasy epic about swordplay, war, demonic magic and horrors, and, just maybe, second chances and redemption.
