80482 Oh dear! Craziness .... perhaps we can do a Public Domain groupread sometime
Jun 22, 2019 06:31PM

80482 Thanks Jack. I was getting some of the durations confused.

“Copyright protection generally lasts for 70 years after the death of the author. If the work was a "work for hire", then copyright persists for 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever is shorter. For works created before 1978, the copyright duration rules are complicated.”

80482 Some members were alarmed at pricing... some “new” condition books of Reign of Wizardry have a 99$ price tag.

Don’t be fooled... look for used versions and you can them (and shipping) for <6$ on Amazon.

Im sure other sites like Abebooks also vary a lot.

Actually, the Golden Blood serial appeared in Weird Tales ~1930 and is probably available in a discount eBook or online.

I think that’s public domain by now.... can anyone confirm?

Well, you have to read Reign of Wizardry now.... it'll help egg me on.

Which cover do you have?

80482 I’m just learning about Jack Williamson, and bought these two on Amazon. Leaning towards reading Wizardry cuz of the Frazetta cover.
80482 Lumely's "Dream" series is pretty good too... still very Lovecraftian adventure like the Primal Land series. These are all fair game!

80482 And John O’Neill on BlackGate.com gave it a nice introduction!

Welcome, pirates!

80482 Nice post AR.

I seem to need
1) Sorcery (over swords)
2) creatures
3) a sense of unknown weirdness/exploration

LOL! I love that art. Erekose has a sword there!

Cripes... thanks for making me stay conflicted about the TBR reading order

One thing that may explain some of the pacing issues (and which I didn't know until very recently) -- the standalone novel is actually an expanded version of a shorter piece (novella? novelette?). You can find the original in one of the recent Del Rey Elric collections...."

Joseph, neat. I didn't know it had evolved so much. Not sure I'll get to the sequels of Erekose anytime soon....

...especially when Jack and others are rereading and enjoying Corum! I may have to continue reading those.

Or I need to brush up on Hawkmoon before the TV series is released.
80482 Just finished Erekose (my first John Daker tale)

In summary, fans of the Eternal Champion with think this is ok. New to the Eternal Champion? I would not start here. Starting with Corum, Elric, or Hawkmoon may be better.

80482 A glimpse of Robert E Howard days: Howard Scholars Jason Ray Carney, David C. Smith, Jason Waltz and Dierk Guenther talk about what defines the S & S genre. How did the Depression affect REH? Are all sorcerers evil and just using a crutch (cuz they can't hold a sword)?

80482 I’ve picked up Erekose #1 (John Daker) The Eternal Champion, 1970... it’s ok so far
