LOL Jocelyne! I'd be banished from the group!

75460 I saw this video http://vimeo.com/68514760, and I thought well isn't this what Proust is doing? Googled, and found these comments in the search page.

That was lovely, as what Marcelita also said. It is true that the process of reading Proust in a group such as this, has been more than just a shared reading experience. Our brains are also undergoing change. You describe a cork lined space that has expanded ten fold. Yes! Our brains are being stretched and rewired to experience - everything - differently. We have become attentive and may very well be walking around for the rest of our lives as Marcel Proust did, trying to capture it all. Marcel Proust will not have died. He will have been reborn in our outlook on life. This book should be prescribed.

75460 Finding women who can write is complicated at the London Review of Books

Some recent correspondence on the gender balance of the London Review of Books.

"on the number of female contributors to the LRB, or reviews of books written by women."

I missed that double-meaning, so it was probably the Duchesse being her witty self.

It pleases me to no end that the articles I share in the lounge are appreciated by like-minded friends!!!! :)

When I think of this group, I think of each person bringing to the group the offering of one piece of the puzzle, and together a picture of the whole comes together. Of course there are some bringing with them a velvet bag full of polished pieces, and we are grateful to you for sharing your acquired knowledge with us. Not only are you sharing understading of the novel, you are sharing a part of yourselves, and it has been so much fun getting to know everyone's personality. A beautiful thing!!

75460 I forgot that I came in earlier to post this:

"There are those who believe that delving into the biography of artists ensures a deeper perception of their art. I am not one of them. The notion that a work of art has to mirror the person of the artist, that man and work are an equation, that the integrity of the person warrants the integrity of his production—such belief seems to me to belong, particularly in the area of music, to the realm of wishful thinking. (The poet Christian Morgenstern has his hero Palmström assert that “there cannot be what must not be.”)"

With all the links to music and our own conversation about Marcel Proust and the narrator, I think it applies.

That's fabulous! I believe that every single person who is active in the threads appreciates the formation of this group and everything that we are learning by reading Proust. This group has atttracted some of the most interesting people who have so much to contribute, and we are the luckier for it.

I thank you personally for inviting me to this group after I made a casual remark on twitter about reading Proust as A New Year's resolution. Who knew that you had already created this group- the year of reading Proust?! Serendipitous!

Mind-candy, oh I like that!!!

Jun 20, 2013 12:19PM

75460 There is a reference to the Duc de Guermantes dressed " in his smoking ( for in France we give to everything that is more or less British the one name that it happens not to bear in England)". (MKE 659) That made me realize of what we, in the Middle East, also refer to as "smoking" - the black tie tuxedo look is the same as the one described here.

The Duchesse speaking to Mme de Grouchy calls her "a regular Nimrod!" (MKE 662) By this I assume she means she is a fool. But in Arabic, nimrood means:
"By the Arabs Nimrod is considered as the supreme example of the tyrant ("al-jabbar").

Do you think Nabokov read Proust in English rather than in French?

Forget my articles, Jocelyne, your post was thoroughly fascinating. I could visualize it all. Thanks for sharing all that information, there are so many points to think about.

It is a magical year!
