"Bella..." He clutched her hand like it was the only thing keeping him from falling over the edge of life. "I love you. You have to remember that. Please, always..." His voice broke.

He could hardly breathe, much less speak or explain. "I- I'm sorry," he managed, quietly. Pain and fear flickered in his gray eyes.

The aching worry was back in his eyes. He glanced out the window, nght still fallen like a cloak. A realization was hitting him, and it sent pain shooting through his chest. He suddenly pulled her closer, a hand on the back of her neck, his lips pressing fiecely to hers.

He shook his head, stubborn. "No. He hurt you, and you dropped the wedding to protect yourself. You did nothing wrong." Before his anger could start up again, he changed the subject. "Anyway, I firmly belive that you are very special,and I'll take you out to the ocean..." His face fell. Bella was in no condition to go anywhere.

His eyes softened. "Bella. That wasn't your fault."

"I know you, Bella, can very easily handle anything."

A mischievous glint flickered in his eyes. "I can take care of that. You deserve more freedom."

"My life is very dull," he replied. "I live in a house near the ocean. That was Jink's request, though I more prefer darkness. I am avoided by most people, so I mostly keep to myself, and I practice my art in the forest at night. I'm sure your life is much more interesting."

"I am simply trying to be a gentleman." Bella was probably the only one in the world who could keep his gaze from wandering to gaze into the moonlit night. He touched the side of her face, tracing its frame and tucking a curl behind her ear.

Robin wrote: "{Oh god. That was so sappy I think I might puke tears. xD }

Bella's mouth dropped. He was good. "Max. That was beautiful," she muttered. "I just. I just want to be with you. And your wonderful eye..."

{Sometimes I get mushy. XD }

"You deserve a lot more than me, you know that?" He sighed with a small smile. "But I will do my best to make you happy." He leaned in, kissing her softly on the cheek.

@Ducky: Oh my, Lynne. How far would you go to get information, I wonder? XD }

"Of course you aren't. You are anything but. You are so sweet and kind. You stay your own person, even with all the pressure of this kingdom on your shoulders." He shook his head in wonder, interlocking their hands. "You walk in a world of light, even... when horrible things are happening. I love you, Bella." His last words were a whisper, as if he were finally breathing out.

He smiled at her, and wondered again how the impossible could have happened. How Bella could possibly return his feelings. He suddenly didn't care if Neil and Lynne were still watching them.

"Yes," he agreed, softly. "Thank you for letting me find you."

He winced, avoiding their searching gazes. "I used to be really good at not drawing attention," he murmured to Bella.

His heart jumped at her words, and he sighed quietly, not moving away this time. A soft smile played across his lips, and he gazed at her fondly.

I watch a squirrel bury peanuts in the ground once and then UNburied them, because I'm a rebel child! XD I win!

"Bella..." Max coughed and shrugged her gently away, clasping her hands. "You know I'd be towed straight out of here in a second if we acted like that," he murmured so only she could hear.

Max looked at the two in amusement. But he was finally realizing that they'd stumbled in to find he and Bella together in her room, and cringed internally at what they must be thinking. So much for keeping up a gentlemanly image.
