Susan Lucci eventually won ;-)
4170 I want to see a Theft of Swords v The Martian Chronicles final

The 3 time loser against the 4 time loser

I think we should read both at some stage. They are both great books. In very different ways.
4170 It is odd that every book on top of each bracket won.

Also odd, though V&T could have done it on purpose, each bracket was a male authored book against a female authored book. 2 men and 2 women won in both Laser and Sword sections.

In the next round each bracket will also be a male authored book versus a female authored book.

I was actually joking. I thought it would be the other way around.

and it was :-(

Go Theft of Swords :-)

To the Millennials and younger he will always be Snape.

But to us old farts he will always be Hans Gruber.

4170 I agree fridging shouldn't be overused, but it is an effective way to set up a revenge plot. It probably says more about mens underdeveloped monkey brains that they tend to get ultra-violent in these situations, which is what the writers were after. Female revenge plots are usually more thought out and methodical.

I was more annoyed that the female character died because she acted stupidly and didn't wait for backup (preferably from real officers)

4170 I'd never heard of fridging before. Knowing now what it is, it would fit this trope.

But isn't TV full of tropes and plot devices. Why give the writers a hard time over using this one.

I agree with the Effects fail. Both practical and CGI. But I will give them a pass for a TV show with a limited budget.

Come on Season 2.
4170 Dumblebum is an arsehole throughout the whole series.

"What we've got here is failure to communicate"

A bit of knowledge at the right time could have save the kids from a lot of grief.

Melanie wrote: "... That guy that mentions Frodo could have just flown an eagle to Mordor. Suspend your disbelief. Your supposed to be too caught up in the world to think of an alternative solution."

and why did Frodo need to go.

As soon as Gandalf realises it is the ONE RING then tie it to a stick. Give it to an eagle and drop it in the fiery pit at Mordor.

Much more efficient, but you miss one hell of a good story ;-)

Everything Pooh isn’t: cute, clever, fun and warm-hearted. A couple of the scenes are downright brilliant, and you’ll know them when you see them.

In short:

Paddington 2 is all grizzly
Christopher Robin is just Pooh

I think she got to the bottom of page 1 and didn't realise there were another 85 pages after it ;-)
4170 Richard wrote: "Mark wrote: "5. Always vote for Theft of Swords. One of these years it has to make it to the finals."

But imagine if it had a few more years of buildup! Support Theft of Swords by voting for Dangerous to Know"

I endorse this strategy. Rob expects to lose eventually this month. So why not Round 1 ;-)
4170 William wrote: "Also: Seriously, it's college basketball? Does college mean something different in the USA? In other countries that'd be basically just a bunch of parents in the stands if you're lucky."

Not even the parents. By then they've had enough of school sports. You'd be lucky to get a crowd of 50 people.

Like Iain said maybe your mates who are only there to drink and take the piss out of you when you f*** up, your girlfriend if your lucky and only if she can get her friends to come along so she has someone to talk to.

Usually the teams outnumber the crowd.

No-one in Australia cars about Uni sport, which is usually Aussie Rules, cricket, Union or League played at an amateur level.

It definitely isn't televised or talked about. If you're lucky the local paper might put the scores in small type among 50,000 other sports.
4170 That makes more sense.

More sense that people caring about college basketball ;-)

March Madness means nothing to us foreigners. I had to ask what March Madness was the first year.

Apparently it has something to do with some silly sport I don't like ;-)

4170 I'm glad I didn't read them in chronological order. If I'd have read "We Interrupt This Broadcast" first, I would have been waiting for the world to find out about that.

Knowing now that no-one outside the two people involved in that story ever knew about what they did, does colour the story differently than if the world ever knew.

I'd say read the 2 novels first, then read the other short stories in whatever order you like.

4170 There are still 2 more books to come in the series.

The Relentless Moon and The Derivative Base

The Relentless Moon (expected in 2020) won't be an Elma story but (view spoiler)

The Derivative Base (expected in 2022) is an Elma and Nathaniel story (view spoiler)
