4170 If you search for news about Roanhorse and her book, an article written by members of a Diné writers collective usually pops up.

https://newsmaven.io/indiancountrytod...

They are extremely critical. Since Roanhorse is not of Diné ancestry, she does not have the authority or experience to write about our people and culture. To do so is cultural appropriation, the act of taking and using things from a culture that is not your own.

They also mention Tony Hillerman, whose books continue to profit off Navajo culture and stories without shame.

They don't seem to leave much room for discussion. I imagine it must be pretty difficult for Roanhorse to receive acclaim from the SF&F community, but contempt from some members of the Native American community. I'm not sure how I would deal with that.

Ironically, her Hugo-winning short story "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience" is a parable about appropriation.

I think it's difficult to argue that writers must have the correct DNA in order to tell a story, but I don't know enough about Diné religion to know if Roanhorse crossed a boundary that she shouldn't have.

4170 LOL. I don't read Marvel comics, but I've been in our Marvel-saturated environment long enough now, that when you point it out, I can see the similarities. The second book was enjoyable but not stellar. I'll read the next book in the series when it comes out.

4170 I preordered Orphan Black: The Next Chapter a few weeks ago. Pretty cool that Tatiana Maslany reads the S&L ad. Can we get her to make a new intro for the podcast with the voice of a clone? Maybe we can vote on the clone! Which clone should voice a S&L intro?

Swords in urban fantasy seem pretty common. Several of Harry Dresden's companions live and die by the sword. Kate Daniels never goes anywhere without Slayer. Maybe they seem plentiful because the authors are prolific.

But my favorite urban fantasy blade is Ray Lilly's ghost knife.

4170 I misidentified the pueblo. Black Mesa is home to San Ildefonso Pueblo (P'ohwhóge Owingeh). Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo) is further north. I think Roanhorse is of Ohkay Owingeh heritage.

San Ildefonso Pueblo (P'ohwhóge Owingeh) is at the base of Black Mesa in New Mexico. I drove by every weekday for years on the way to work.

It's a game too? ;-)

4170 I took a break from fiction, binged the second season of Mindhunter on Netflix, then read Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Edward Douglas and now I'm going to run screaming back to fiction.

4170 Disney+ is spinning up and this weekend it's possible to subscribe at a good discount (saving 33%) if you're willing to create a Disney account, join D23, and pay for three years of Disney+ in advance.

Info at https://d23.com/disney-plus-exclusive...

With the Disney back catalog, the MCU, and Star Wars, it seems like there is something for everyone to stream and I might go ahead and do this.
