38077 Me too...

38077 I finished the Soldier but can'd decide what I thought of it. I also read Mary Jo Putney's novella Wedding of the Century .Its a very compelling picture of a marriage getting off on the wrong foot, as many must have, but I don't find the HEA particularly compelling or believable.

38077 Oh, I'll have to go re-read that. I think there are S-S scenes in the last two B books, aren't there? But I don't remember the violin breaking....

38077 I'm reading The Soldier by Grace Burrows and having a very mixed reaction. On the one hand, I find the writing and the relationships compelling. On the other hand, she's ignoring much of the basics of the time period--or perhaps that is the wrong word, since at one point she has the character be grateful that a rule only applies in London but not in the country, which was certainly not true. (At least, not the one about being in a young woman's bedroom.) And perhaps the relaitonships would be clearer if I had read the prior book, but that just seems like sloppy writing to me.

38077 I know, that's my problem too! Still, its worth trying to read her when you dig down in the pile a bit. She is absolutely wonderful.
(I'm trying to turn to my nonfiction TBR pile right now.)

38077 Reread a bunch of Baloghs. I had forgotten how compelling Christmas belle and a gentle conquest are. I am not as enamoured of a a secret affair bit it's still beautifully done.
And it reminded me of how wonderfully she puts us in the time period. The smallest details are right but it's more than that. They are woven into the story: when children are invited to a house party she points out that they can play in the gallery on rainy days. When the hero goes out to buy presents for children they are the right presents. When her characters have leisure time they play cricket and have tea with the children in the nursery. And I love the way her parents really interact with children even though they have nurses.... I never feel jarred by anachronisms but even more I feel persuaded by the detail.

38077 Kasey--you could try your library. She's fabulous--even if they don't have her new book its worth reading anything they have by her.

38077 Kasey I completely agree that in this book they all knew ezcept Daisy. I thought in earlier books only one knew--but perhaps it was just that the others put up a good front. Or of course it could have just been different cousins.
Didn't it say it was Felicity he was following ? I need to go back and look...

38077 Hi All
I hope you noticed that Manda posted threads for this discussion.
I am going to suggest that we do either Loretta Chase's new book, or Meredith Duran's new book for July, since both are out at the end of June. And maybe the other one for August.

38077 I bought Courtney's book from Goodreads adn downloaded it on my laptop(ok, then I transfered it to my nook, but you don't have to--just download the free b and n reader onto your laptop.)
I just saw on her blog that Smite's book will be more or less self published. She says Unlocked was her way of deciding whether she could do a good job selfpublishign. I would say the test was successful.
I am rereading a lot of Balogh. I SHOULD be digging into my nonfiction TBR pile, but my daughter is in Ghana for a month and I'm too tense about it to make myself concentrate on anything serious!

38077 I'm still trying to decide what I think of this book. I really liked the relationshp between the couple and the intensity of the medical scenes--there was never a false note. But it wasn't as laugh out loud funny as many of her books have been.
I assume that later books will tell Daniel's story adn also (or perhaps its the same one) that of the governess.
One question--wasn't there supposed to be only one s-s quartet member who realized how bad they all were?

38077 Sounds good to me! Of course I am 2/3 of the way through already. I would love to be able to talk about it.

38077 There is so much more going on in this scene than it seems like when you just read the excerpt too...Its just a great book.

38077 Wonderful book! She's an autobuy for me. Great choice Monica!
May 30, 2011 10:46AM

38077 Yes, it was really amazing. I just read it last night, but i have a feeling I'll reread it today. I didn't even realize she had written it until I saw a chance reference--i thought I had to wait until Mark Turner's book was out!

38077 Just finished Courtney Milan's new novella. I loved it. Its amazing how much intensity she packed into 90 pages.
Waiting for JQ's new book...

38077 Actually I think it's coming back to me. And it was a wonderful book. Very slow in development and worth the time. A great choice!

38077 I have no idea. It sounds wonderful.

38077 "I think a lot of today's authors try to attempt something new and original and they completely disregard why readers actually read historicals. " That's true, of course, but in this particular case I think she was just trying to write something racy--there are at least two scenes in the first 50 pages that would just never have happened in any way--one of which involves a bath on an overnight boat trip to France--the likelihood of someone getting that in the early 19th c on anything short of a luxury yacht would be 0...not to mention that the scene violates all the likely ways that a young women would behave when involuntarily sharing a cabin with a man she doesn't know. Sigh.
On a much brighter note, I'm really enjoying Dragon Bound. Its funny and does a wonderful job of really playing out how the various paranormal factors would affect the relationsihp between the characters. I'm not a big paranormal fan at all (and couldn't get through Nalini Singh) but I highly recommend this one.
