Review + 10 points One of the best political thrillers I ever read. When Algery becomes independent, many people in France ( and elsewhere) are unhappy with the events. A group of people from the OAS decides to hire an assassin, the top of his profession, to murder De Gaulle, the French president. When the story unfolds we follow the conspirators, alternated with the nervousness in the intelligence all over Europe when the rumors about the plot start to trickle down. In a third focus, we see the assassin getting ready for the murders, planning precisely and meticulously how and where to strike.
In a cinematic view, we follow the three parties in this story, building up tension as we go further.
The novel is written in a rather detached style, describing very detailed and cold all the preparations for and the considerations for this plotted attack. It is this coldness that gave me the chills. Life and murder are treated here as a casual thing, like going out to buy some eggs or bread. You just need some more preparations.
Also, I found the portrayal of the Gaulle and the time the book took place very recognizable, though you don't need to be familiar with it to enjoy the book.

Review :
Science fiction is not often on my to-read lists, but once in a while, I go for it, sometimes with success, sometimes not. However, this book has been on my TBR list for a long time. For some reason, I kept putting it off until now.
Much to my surprise this was a wonderful and funny book. I enjoyed it: the humor, the surrealism, the never knowing what is coming, the unforgettable characters, the names the characters got, the 'everything is possible' vibe and so much more.
I read the second part right the same day as it brought me in such a great mood.

Review :
Where do I even begin to write a review of this novel? It's my second read and I even love it more than the first time. The main character, Janina Duszejko, a woman in her sixties describes some strange murders happening in her village. She blames all these murders on the animals that take revenge on those hunting them. She even uses astrological theories and constellations to prove her point. While more and more people find death, it becomes clear who killed all these hunters. But this book is so much more than a thriller: it is a wonderful portrait of an older woman who loves nature and animals more than anything. Her thinking might be sometimes odd, but literate in philosophy and literature, as well as in astrology, she is a remarkable person. Quite often she brought a real smile to my face. Pondering on feet washing: she tells us that gets more important with age as the risk of needing an ambulance is bigger:-) What struck me most was the immense love for the world, nature and the animals. Her solution is not really what I would choose, but I can feel and understand her anger. She is kind of crazy, but that craziness might be in each one of us, given the right circumstances. I loved the end of the book as it showed the empathy of people around her.
I highly recommend this book.

BOOK: Kat & muis Kat & muis by Ian Rankin Ian Rankin 231 p. 19 march
Made into inspector Rebus series
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebus_(...

This book is more than fourty years old, but that was not really noticeable.
Of coourse life then was different and the pace might be a bit slower, but suspenseful books stay as suspenseful as they were.
The Main character, Rebus, is not really a super sympathic character, but more than anything he is a human with his faults and mistakes. This made me feel empathic towards him. A lot of the book is devoted to getting to know Rebus, but the rest of the story is good, and it takes time before you learn anything about what could have caused all the murders. The writing is excellent and the book is a short and entertaining read. I will certainly read more of them.
