Nah, I knew going in that my question was going to be kind of annoying. Your response made sense :)

The marketing one is definitely a good distinction. I expect maybe Locus falls under that too, then? Anyway, I'm all for inclusion and playing it by ear!

36119 I'd like to add https://www.goodreads.com/series/8661... - it works for 10.4 but if it qualified here I'd get more points.

36119 Oh, and a followup from my last question - in the same vein are the Ditmar Awards - they're similar to the Hugos, but for Australia only.

36119 I just read She Loves Me, He Loves Me Not by Zeenat Mahal, and it definitely would have qualified under A and C until two chapters went to the United States. So now I need to figure out if Mahal qualifies for B - I don't find anything that says she isn't still a Pakistani national, but I know she was educated in England and still seems to have ties there. She refers to herself as Pakistani in this blog post (http://www.zeenatmahal.com/2014/12/ho...), so I'm assuming she has not changed citizenship, but could I verify that I can claim this book for Pakistan?

Thanks!

36119 A discussion in the completed tasks thread has me wondering. Does this have to be a juried prize, basically? The "people's choice/popularity award" distinction may be a little blurry in some cases.

In the tasks thread, the one under discussion was the Locus Award, which is voted on by Locus magazine subscribers. If that doesn't work, does that mean the Hugo doesn't work also, since it's voted on by people who buy memberships? In fact, of the most well-known and prestigious science fiction and fantasy awards, the only one that is chosen by a jury is the World Fantasy Award. The Nebulas are voted on by all the members of the SFWA.

I totally understand not allowing popular choice awards, but I'd like to understand where that gets cut off. It seems like the Book Sense one that was not allowed is similar to most of the ones I'm mentioning, in the sense that it is voted on by a restricted large group of people, but I think everyone would have expected something like the Hugo award to definitely count.

I have a bit of a NyQuil hangover right now, so I hope this all makes sense :)

Unfortunately, no. The Buy, Borrow, Bypass column is part of the blog. Only entries like http://bookriot.com/2015/03/09/book-r... will work. They'll say "The Book Riot Podcast" and have an episode number. For Dear Book Nerd, they'll say "Dear Book Nerd #..."

Yeah, the index was working the last time I checked, but not when I just went to it. If it's still broken in a couple of days I'll let them know - it may just be being edited since a new episode just came out.

I'll let Liz confirm, but I believe so.

We went back and forth on how to narrow it down - by podcast or by date - and chose the list of podcasts, so later episodes should qualify. The moderators won't be scanning every single podcast for new (or old, for that matter) show notes though - you'll have to find your own combos :)

I'm still back and forth on this one, and I'd like Liz to weigh in on what I'm thinking:

1) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe seems to be one of the books that was mentioned in passing on Books on the Nightstand and thus shows up in the book index compiled by a friend of the show, but the hosts did not add it to the show notes. I am inclined to only allow books that are in the show notes associated with the specific episode; that would mean that not every book in the index will work, and the episode notes must be verified.

2) I did find the entire Chronicles of Narnia mentioned here: http://bookrageous.podbean.com/e/book.... It's a little more precise than your find of "Narnia" mentioned in passing, but it isn't a specific book. In most previous challenges (and for canon, etc.) we usually take the approach that a single book qualifies if the entire series is listed, but this may be different. This is a weird one since it's so often sold as one volume.

Liz, what do you think?

36119 Alright, I'll stop after this (going on vacation and trying to line up some fun reads):

https://www.goodreads.com/series/8405... (only two are out but the description says it's a five-part series?)

That's true, and I expect it's why the moderators allowed me to keep so many options on the list :)

Dear Book Nerd is hosted on bookriot.com, which has regular entries in addition to a few different podcasts, so just make sure it comes from a podcast entry and not just a blog post.

I'm already finding that I remember certain books being talked about but I can't remember which podcast, or the book won't have ended up on the show notes. Still, the combos will be plentiful, I expect.

You're good on that one - I actually remember that episode and the book cover. The show notes just got it wrong :)

36119 You got it!
Mar 01, 2015 04:55PM

36119 In case you don't notice, some of those podcasts are hosted by people who have blogs, so make sure if you use the search function that the result links to a podcast episode.
