I've been thinking the same and have set up a kobo account. It seems good for everything that isn't kindle unlimited. I haven't yet looked at their equivalent.The Amazon linked product I'll have trouble quitting is this one - would miss you all too much.

I've got a book set in Havana, Cuba. Feel like Cuba is central America rather than south so can't be used for those tasks. Happy to hear alternative opinions though!
