35559 Thanks Rebecca, I just happen to have the hard copy so I know how beautiful it is inside and out. I’m glad to know that people love the book. I don’t know why I have waited to read it because I have had it since the very first came out. Lol

35559 DQ's Day One: Chapters 1-7
TEAM JEALOUSY (and proud of it!)

1. I love the world building this author does for her universe. I find it helpful in epic fantasies when authors give a little narrative upfront about the main characters in the story and their interrelationships. The world is very grey where Gideon lives - even her porridge is grey. Her arrival in this house as a baby from a woman that fell into the world was very auspicious. Gideon attempted to run away when she was four, and tried 86 times to run away by the time she was 18. What were your initial impressions of this world?

I thought her world was rather dark, depressing, and not a world I'd want to be in; however, I thought it was very well-written and gave me a good insight into why Gideon would want to run, but at such a young age is scary but it does speak to just how badly she wanted out of it.

2. Harrow tricked Gideon when she talked about her offer of freedom. Gideon seemed to have the upper hand, but then Harrow won the fight through her earlier planning and planting that day. What do you think that says about their relationship?

The first thought I had is that they aren't close if one feels the need to manipulate the other. I think Harrow wants power, power is control, so I saw it as Harrow wanting to have the upper hand.

3. So Harrow wants Gideon to be her guardian as she travels to the other houses. Seems like a good opportunity to get off the Ninth, and become a Cohort. Gideon does take the position. Do you think that was a good choice for her?

I don't know that it was a "good" choice, but it did seem like the best choice for her at that time.

4. I liked when Gideon’s sword instructor said “anyone can learn to fight, not anyone can learn to think”. Do you think that Gideon needs to do more thinking than fighting?

For some reason this reminded me of Odysseus in his travels and how he had to use more brain than brawn. Odysseus was known for his great warrior skills around the world, but his skills were no match for the likes of Charybdis and Scylla, the Cyclops and other monsters he came across. Sometimes a fighter/warrior will come up against someone or something that is just stronger and a fight just won't work, so one needs to be able to think more that fight.

5. What do you think about the House of the First? The world seems like the exact opposite of the ninth in terms of light and sky, rather than everything grey. All the houses are there - do you think Gideon is going to get into trouble or save Harrow from trouble?

I think they'll probably work together and get into trouble together, but I think if Harrow does end up needing to be saved that Gideon will save Harrow or do what she can to save her.

Okay, thank you. :) It's frustrating because I just read this one and Wilder Girls, so that eliminates me from a lot of points. :(
35559 How will we know if we've been selected to do the DQ's? I read that volunteers were already chosen for all the BOM's on a TT thread so I wanted to be sure because this thread says people may volunteer up to 3 days prior to the start.

35559 Has anyone read Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman ? If so, would it qualify because it has varied format and font on different pages. I've had it forever and still haven't read it and it's beautiful cover. I thought I might read it but now I'm not sure it would count.

35559 That’s too funny! Yet we’re still using it to verify. Loll I guess the good news is the more dominant colors show up to larger percentages.

I am ready to add this (my last) book but wanted to be sure about where to add it. I planned to use it for PRIDE - Contemporary but it's tagged Romance > Contemporary Romance. Does that work? Otherwise I'll have to use it as Lust - book published in 2019 so not as many points.

35559 How are we doing for our book count? I have one more book that I'll finish very shortly and there's another one I could add but I don't want us to go over. Could we use it? Or should I not add it? I'm down for 6.75 books pw and when I post my next it'll be my 7th
