35559 The Chiffon Trenches by André Leon Talley

The Chiffon Trenches by André Leon Talley

During André Leon Talley's first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild's Women's Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends, he also made enemies. A racially tinged encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella.

There, he eventually became creative director, developing an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour. As she rose to the top of Vogue's masthead, André also ascended, and soon became the most influential man in fashion.

The Chiffon Trenches offers a candid look at the who's who of the last fifty years of fashion. At once ruthless and empathetic, this engaging memoir tells with raw honesty the story of how André not only survived the brutal style landscape but thrived--despite racism, illicit rumors, and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry--to become one of the most renowned voices and faces in fashion.

Woven throughout the book are also André's own personal struggles that have impacted him over the decades, along with intimate stories of those he has turned to for inspiration (Diana Vreeland, Diane von Férstenberg, Lee Radziwill, to name a few), and of course his Southern roots and ongoing faith, which have guided him since childhood.

Murder Your Employer (The McMasters Guide to Homicide, #1) by Rupert Holmes

Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes

Who hasn't wondered for a split second what the world would be like the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you've probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death.

The campus of this "Poison Ivy League" college-its location unknown to even those who study there-is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate...and where one's mandatory graduation thesis is getting away with the perfect murder of someone whose death will make the world a much better place to live.

Prepare for an education you'll never forget. A delightful mix of witty wordplay, breathtaking twists and genuine intrigue, Murder Your Employer will gain you admission into a wholly original world, cocooned within the most entertaining book about well-intentioned would-be murderers you'll ever read.

35559 DQ writers have already been selected for the 2 Nov BOM. Yay for my extra entry, it got our team a DQ writing spot :)

Anyone can still join that discussion though, Lexi read the book before the challenge and recommended it. Besides, what's not to love about a sentient spider plant?

The other 2 BOMs are still open for DQ volunteers if anyone is interested in tossing their name into the the randomizer.

35559 Anyone else have some favorite reads from Round 1?

35559 I think my favorite reads of Round 1 were

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches: it was like a hug. Nothing overly original but a nice story of finding your place in the world and found family along the way. A light read but a bit more than just fluff.

and

Daughter of No Worlds. With it being pushed on BookTok my expectations were actually fairly low. But I enjoyed it more than I thought. The author didn't shy away from discussing some tough topics. And it was nice that the FMC didn't immediately learn a new language in like a day and be able to communicate without complications in the new country she found herself in. There were certainly some pacing issues but overall I was pleasantly surprised.
