Book/Author: The Rains (Rains #1) by Gregg Andrew Hurwitz
Date Read: Jun 5
Page Count: 368
How It Fits: Pg. 15: I clutched those baling hooks like a second-rate Wolverine…

I don't know whether it is just this book in particular or I have gotten over YA Dystopias but I have not been enjoying the book as much as I would want to. At the same time, it is not so bad I would want to DNF it. It does have me curious to know how it ends so that's something at least.

11. The fight with Raff's old band (who looked like clowns) that ended with snakes is one of the first times we see the almost full band working together. What did you think of this scene? Did you like the action or was it confusing?
This was an excellent bit of showing the state in which the band is after being apart for so many years. One could make out they needed to get back into the groove and this fight showed then starting to do just that.
12. So the hoarder kobolds - I thought they were great! And the bird-like creatures pulling the carriage. Do you have a favorite creature you've seen so far, or one you'd like to see? Tell why.
Hands down, the wyvern. I find the folklore around wyverns fascinating.
13. I think in the last half of this section we really start understanding what a big deal the Kings of Wyld really were. And we get to compare them to the Screaming Eagles. What do you think about the ethics and popularity of the new bands that kill captive monsters in arenas?
I think this is a great comparison to many things in modern day where the concepts of honour and courage have given way to providing entertainment to the masses.
14. Lastleaf gave his (and the hordes') motivations for conquest. Do you think his reasons were valid, or is he just evil? Do you feel at all sorry for the monsters?
I thought Lastleaf was pure evil until reading back story. I still think he is evil incarnate but can empathise with him to a certain degree. I think it is the age old argument between whether he was evil or made into an evil entity.
15. We all picked our favorite character in day 1 questions. Has yours changed since then?
While Moog is a close second, my favourite will stay Clay.

6. We meet the 3rd member of the band, the wizard Moog. What are your impressions of the wizard? Were you as surprised as Clay that he agreed to go right away?
I adore Moog!!! He reminds me so much of "Howling Mad" Murdock from the A-Team, another one of my favourite characters. I was not at all surprised that he agreed to go with Clay because I got the impression that he was trying to hide his loneliness and wanted to be back with his people.
7. That was some entrance to the palace, don't you think? What were your first impressions of Matrick? Were you surprised by the turn of events in chapter 11? Excited or worried when Moog announces that he had a plan?
That was a cool introduction to Matrick. I found Matrick fascinating as a character, watching him having got what he thought he wanted only to find the whole situation very boring. Excited, only excited when Moog comes up with a plan. I am expecting the entire team to be put through the wringer before they eventually come out of it victorious.
8. After several descriptions sprinkled thoughout the story thus far, we finally meet a druin. What do you think his plan is? Why does he really want the Council to stand down?
That was interesting. I am curious to see where the story is going to take us and what happens to the team but I am sure there is something highly nefarious being planned. I get the definite feel of a “divide and conquer” mentality.
9. Were you surprised at how Lillian arranged the funeral? What did you think of Clay's contribution? How successful would you rate Moog's plan?
I was not at all surprised at Lillian’s arrangements. I knew she was going to provide the proverbial fly in the ointment and muck up the team’s plot. I think Clay was excellent in dealing with the situation though it might have been also because Moog’s plans while seeming to be chaotic have a tendency to work. Eventually. Without too much murder and mayhem. Maybe just a little bit.
10. Gabriel borrows Moog's crystal ball to check on his daughter. Were you surprised at what he saw? What did you think of the band's reaction?
Nope, I was not at all surprised and was expecting even worse. I just knew that the band would take it in their stride and would just deal with it.

1.) What do you think of the premise of the book, like an aging rock band getting back together to go on tour but an adventuring band instead? Is the author pulling it off so far?
I liked the premise very much but it reminded me more of many movies where a band of retired cowboys/agents/etc. gets together for one last adventure with one of the members generally having some kind of personal involvement, for eg., a wife or daughter having been kidnapped. One I understood the concept of the rock band, it made much more sense and I felt that the author did a good job of creating the characters and the backgrounds.
2.) The rocks, may of hit me a bit in the feels. Did it affect your opinion of Gabe at all?
I loved this because it spoke of Gabe’s love for his child so very strongly and was such a beautiful way to show it. I definitely liked Gabe more after that.
3.) How do you like the world building, is it being done effectively for you without major info dumping? Is it helping to set the stage for the story?
I think the world building is being done very well, just the right amount of information, enough so one can imagine the place but not so much that it feels like a lecture.
4.) What did you think about the parade? Did anyone else enjoy Clay's reaction to the ladies being whistled at and be disappointed when the lady blew a kiss back instead of skewering the guy (like Clay expected to happen)?
The parade was a great way to show the way attitudes had changed, not only of the bands but also the fans and spectators.
5.) Do you have a favorite character so far?
Clay, definitely Clay.
Bonus: Taking a poll for a very important question. On the Tassel Farm: Centaur or Moose?
I am hoping for Centaur but I think it is going to turn out to be a Moose.

I listened to the audiobook of The Fireman by Joe Hill recently and loved it. Kate Mulgrew has done a superb job of narrating the book. I was already a fan of her acting and now going to look for more books narrated by her. From what I have found so far, there are two more of Joe Hill's books that she has narrated and I want to listen to them soon.

Nothing like being totally wrong on the other. I was seeing maybe navy blue, but TinEye says black. Oh well."
I sometimes call it TinBrain when the colour results don't come out the way I want them. 😜

And I second what Jenny says... Chocolate, more chocolate, lots of chocolate!
Also, chicken soup (or veggie soup, if you are a vegetarian) with lots of black pepper!!!

And I agree, shorter books make more sense.

Great question - we should have added a note here for ..."
Ah, that makes sense. I know now to also look for specific page counts. Thanks, Karolyn!
