Yes! I hate when childhood favorites don't have the same impact when we grow up :(. As a child I never thought of the Narnia books as religious - now I can see that, but knowing about CS Lewis' life I'm ok with what he was trying to do. I tried to read Little Women as an adult and couldn't finish it - but I was just bored - I think I knew the story too well.
I still have an irrational love for the Little House on the Prairie books that I loved as a kid. But now I have a great respect for Ma who had to keep giving up her home!
Sammy - I definitely want to read more Sherlock Holmes books now. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the one!
I checked and he narrates the whole series - I wish I had known. He's really fantastic - his voices, just everything - so so good.
I read
and
. The first two I'd purchased on Audible about 10 years ago. Zoo City was ok - kind of an interesting concept. Sherlock Holmes was really great - that surprised me!I owned The Last Battle in print, but decided to listen to the audio version. I had no idea they were narrated by Patrick Stewart til I recognized his voice. What a treat - he was excellent!!
Tina, I felt the same way about Parable of the Sower - "like" is too simple of a word for such a complex story!Glad to get the recommendation of Fledgling from two of you. Except darn it! For every book I read from my TBR, seems like two books take its place!
I enjoyed the movie more too. I thought that the Mary Poppins in the book was a little bitchy. But maybe it's just because she didn't keep breaking into song :)
just got finished late last night, and then I stayed up all night not happy. Another genocide book like Half of a Yellow Sun - I guess I can see why there were on my list for so long - such a sad topic. I will move on to more cheerful reads probably. But I'm glad I finally read it.

I've had this on my shelf for several years but just could..."
That has been on my list for almost 10 years now! Good job getting it read.
I love that book bond with your dad, Sammy - you started my day off with a smile describing that. You started me on my Robert McCammon adventure too! I haven't read much yet, but I will!
@Eldarwen - I have Eon at my house because my daughter read it - I didn't have it on my TBR - but it is now!
This is the only type of "spring cleaning" i really enjoy! I visited my 81-year-old dad this week. He's always been a huge science fiction reader and not liked fantasy. I share my kindle account with him (eep - I hope he never reads a certain hedgehog shifter book), and he was raving about 1) Anne Bishop's the Others series 2) the Innkeeper Series and 3) Kate Daniels. It makes me surprised and happy - he was NOT in my expected demographic for those!
I deleted another book from my shelf - The Watchmaker's Daughter - it may be good - but it is tagged as YA, reviews said nothing really resolved in the first book, and its a 13 book series. I just have too many other things. (I'm personally not counting books I eliminate as part of my challenge, but I wanted to record it here to assuage my guilt or something).I also read
(on my shelf since 2016). I enjoyed it a lot - maybe I read it at just the right time, but yes, loved it.I listened to, and just finished
- on my shelf since 2015. I can't say I enjoyed it exactly, because it was about the civil war/genocide in Nigeria. Recent world events resonated with this - and what is even sadder that probably for the last 60 years we could say that about some conflict or another. Anyway, it was an important book for me to read, but I can also see why I didn't read it for so long.
I listened to
, which I've owned for 7 years. It was ok - a bit boring but not horrible. I liked the parts that described the quarantine with the 1918 flu epidemic, coming on top of the war. It was interesting to see the parallels, written at a time before current events.
Oops - posted the non-audible - but I listened on audible so it looked almost identical. Just a short zombie book.
Oh that does look like a good series - I readlly liked A Boy's Life that you introduced me to!I read almost the same cover!
I remember The Chocolate War and Ralph Ellison's The Invisible Man being disappointing in High School - mostly because the books weren't at all what my immature brain was expecting from the title.
