35559 DQs Day 3 (Chapters 14-19)

10. Other retellings have painted Thetis in a more sympathetic manner, more of a protective mother than an angry Goddess. What do you make of the decision to paint her in a more negative light in this book?
i think she is trying to make a distinction as to how thetis has more power and influence than a mortal woman would and i guess this probably makes her seem more unlikable to the people around her so she is also unlikable to us, but i'm not sure if i really like it or not.

11. By now, we've discovered the full prophecy surrounding Achilles. Despite the warnings from his mother and Patroclus, he seems determined to achieve the status of Godhood and 'cheat' his prophecy by surviving. What are your thoughts on Achilles' attitude towards his fate? If you were in his shoes, would you stay on the island in hiding and live a long but normal life, or go to war to die a hero?
i don't think he really takes it seriously because nothing has ever been hard for him and he's pretty much had everything handed to him and never had anything truly bad happen to him. if you asked me now i would 500% stay home because who cares what people think, but if you asked me when i was 16 i'm sure i would have made just as many bad decisions as he does. also the award for the line that just makes you go OUCH is 'what has hector ever done to me'. UGH. ACHILLES.

12. When the weather prevents the army from rowing out to fight, the leaders come up with a plan to do a sacrifice from the Goddess Artemis to please her and get some wind back. After tricking Achilles into agreeing to marrying Agamemnon's daughter, she is sacrificed before the marriage can begin. Were you surprised that this happened? Do you think there was anything Achilles could have done to save her? Do you agree with Patroclus that Odysseus is to blame as much as Agamemnon?
not really but i know from the mythology that she dies soooo. i don't really think there was anything achilles could have done unless he had found out about it beforehand but he had no idea so it's definitely not his fault. i don't know if odysseus shares blame equally with agamemnon but i'm sure he had more to do with it than he lets on. and also if he really wanted to talk him out of it he probably could have. never trust odysseus lol
35559 @Claudia i don't want to answer that either way bc definitely spoilers lol

@Cathy there is a time in a future book where Cal and Robin go to mess with a bunch of revenants and Robin brings Salome along in a cat carrier because he says she needs the exercise lol but yeah i agree she could be a major help, especially since they are fighting animals in this one. but maybe her and robin just haven't bonded enough yet at this point.
35559 @Claudia totally agree about niko (view spoiler)

35559 @Cat River of Teeth is so good!

probably the only one i will have real trouble with is shifters - and maybe not even then if it counts the top 100 tags and not just the main pages one. or possibly new adult since i have never paid attention to whether books i read are new adult or not, i just shelve them as adult or YA, but should be interesting!
35559 @Claudia yeah i think cal was just so in denial about the whole thing and that is why it took him so long to figure it out, although i'm kind of surprised it took niko as long as it did.

@Cathy i know i hate that niko and promise fight so much in this but i guess they are some pretty big issues. and no the cat is not a spy, she just really wanted to go home with robin for some bizarre reason lol although i guess anything is probably better than hanging around that basement

also i went to an art museum today and they had a big japanese exhibit with a ton of katanas so i was thinking about niko the whole time. and also thinking about niko probably trying to drag cal around museums and cal just not being appreciative at all lol
35559 @Alysa i agree that it's not REALLY 'purple' but like ...i don't know what else to say i guess. it's not purple in the sense of overly flowery language but i think the meandering plot and general tone give me the same feeling so i struggle to find another word to describe how it feels to me. i guess sandy is probably closer in calling it 'lush'. or maybe just 'soft'. and there's nothing wrong with any of those things and i do even enjoy them on occasion, but it's just not working for me here i guess.

and i don't hate the book, i rated it 3 stars after all. i just do feel like i'm 'missing something' i guess because i'm like 'yeah it was okay' and most people who read it are generally raving about it.
35559 @Mary i'm pretty much in the same boat. i am rereading it because i wanted to see if i would get all the hype this time around but i'm at about 40% and not in any hurry to finish it at all. i don't know what the problem is, i love the achilles/patroclus story in general and like ...the bar is so low for it that it's literally underground. i mean basically if you actually make them lovers and not 'cousins' then you're doing great, but for some reason i've never been able to get into this book.
35559 i finished it a couple days ago but then i guess i kind of forgot about the BR. i really like it overall, and especially how it showed Sidra and Pepper had very similar journeys but also turned out to be very different people. also i thought the end was super cute.
35559 i read through chapter 7 today so just over half.

two fairly non-spoilery things i love about this book are 1. robin's new cat and 2. “Sharks with arms. Big-ass eel. Goddamn Auphe. Watch your ass.” kills me every single time.
35559 i'm about a third of the way through right now and i'll probably end up being half done by tonight. i just love these books so much it's hard to slow down lol but yes i agree that i love niko's pov! this is the book that really made me love him the first time i read the series. and i like seeing private moments of him and promise together that we don't really get from cal's pov.

35559 i liked it but i felt like i had more questions than answers by the time i was done with it lol. that could just be me being temporarily stupid though ;)

35559 haha i feel the same way about chocolate and mint. everyone loves it but i'm just like why???
Jun 05, 2019 08:51AM

35559 incryptid is kind of hit or miss for me depending on who is the protagonist for the book, but they are a lot of fun. i was going to reread them all but i got stuck on book 3 because i don't like it that much lol
Jun 05, 2019 08:12AM

35559 haha i also am very happy with the words you have chosen. please don't look up chocolate words in other languages that have X in them ;)
Jun 05, 2019 08:11AM

35559 haha i didn't really like him until later in the series. i just think he comes across as too arrogant in the early books, but i guess he is a cat ;) i do love him now though
Jun 05, 2019 07:49AM

35559 i'm a bit biased since i've read everything she's written under both of her pen names but i think she's brilliant lol wayward children has definitely turned out to be her most popular series i think, but it's unsurprising since it seems most really popular books are YA these days. at any rate, i'm glad that it's causing her to get more recognition because i think she totally deserves it!
Jun 05, 2019 07:47AM

35559 or Z's or V's lol. the only ones that might be a little bit hard are the W's and U, but out of the rare letters i think those are definitely the best.

35559 you know it!
