35559 #39 Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton by Jo Walton

4,5 stars rounded up to 5, a retelling of Anthony Trollope's Framely Parsonage, a Victorian classic, with Dragons, not the shapeshifting kind!

It was wonderfully weird and weirdly wonderful and I loved it.

I added this book to my TBR in 2020 and thankfully stuck with it. In this instance I think it's better that I waited, as I may not have appreciated it as much back then as I do now.

Sounds promising!

And I'm very glad you enjoyed Bring Up the Bodies. Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell series is a special favourite for me. ☺️

35559 #38 An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer by Georgette Heyer
3,5 - 4 stars

The build-up and the description of the Battle of Waterloo was really great, but the romance left me utterly cold with a silly and detestable female MC.

35559 Twelve Kings in Sharakhai (The Song of the Shattered Sands, #1) by Bradley P. Beaulieu by Bradley P. Beaulieu

Sharakhai, the great city of the desert, center of commerce and culture, has been ruled from time immemorial by twelve kings -- cruel, ruthless, powerful, and immortal. With their army of Silver Spears, their elite company of Blade Maidens and their holy defenders, the terrifying asirim, the Kings uphold their positions as undisputed, invincible lords of the desert. There is no hope of freedom for any under their rule.

Or so it seems, until Çeda, a brave young woman from the west end slums, defies the Kings' laws by going outside on the holy night of Beht Zha'ir. What she learns that night sets her on a path that winds through both the terrible truths of the Kings' mysterious history and the hidden riddles of her own heritage. Together, these secrets could finally break the iron grip of the Kings' power...if the nigh-omnipotent Kings don't find her first.

35559 I nominate The Inheritance (Breach Wars, #1) by Ilona Andrews by Ilona Andrews

We are at war. The interdimensional invasion brought us unimaginable suffering, but it also awoke talents slumbering deep within us, a means to repel and destroy our enemy. Every day new gates open, leading to breaches filled with monsters and valuable resources. If you are a Talent, your country needs you. The world needs you. Be the hero you were born to be.

Adaline is a Talent. Ten years ago, she had a happy marriage and a job she loved. The invasion shattered both. Now she works for the government, searching the breaches for magic metals and medicine to help Earth repel an interdimensional enemy. Two kids, one cat, bills, benefits, mortgage and school tuition...Risking her life became routine.

She had gone into the dimensional gates hundreds of times. She was always well protected. This time everything goes wrong. Now Ada is trapped in the labyrinth of alien caves unlike any other. Her only companion is a scared German Shepherd named Bear. Together they must uncover the breach's secrets and escape, because Ada promised her children that she will come home.

The future of humanity depends on it.

Operation Thunderbolt Flight 139 and the Raid on Entebbe Airport, the Most Audacious Hostage Rescue Mission in History by Saul David
The Odyssey by Homer (narrator Ian McKellen)
The Vatican Diaries A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Power, Personalities, and Politics at the Heart of the Catholic Church by John Thavis

35559 I'm not sure which group is doing Turf Wars, but my guess is "Game Night"?

Wheelaton is another crazy fun challenge here at NBRC and usually takes place in the autumn. It's also built around a theme where we are doing spell-outs and hunt for words + there are Mini challenges on the side.

I'm adding the link to last year's info page: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

But should Mods come up with something different, I'm game. ;)

I know of Turf Wars, but hasn't participated yet. After doing UNO & TT, I need some time to wind down.

But I'm hoping that the lovely Mods are not too tired of so much travelling and will throw a Wheelathon challenge at us in the autumn. 🤞😊
