I can't think who you might be thinking about!

🤣
35559 DQs Day 1
Ch 1 to 7

1.) Have you read other books by Alix E Harrow? Was this on your tbr list before it was a BOM selection? Any expectations going in?

I have, and find her ok but not outstanding. So expecting a reasonable riff on ideas already better done elsewhere

2.) Did you read the footnotes as you went along? Find them helpful? Annoying?

Not the best version of footnotes that I've seen, the tone being very strange and inconsistent

3.) The discussion of E.Starling's book being too scary for children reminded me of some interviews with M.Sendalk when the Where the Wild Things movie came out several years ago about books, etc that scare children (when children are the target audience). His response was basically children should be scared sometimes and there's nothing wrong with that. And has further said, it's better to have a book full of fears than one pretending there's nothing to be afraid of. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Yeah, adults want to sanitize but kids love a bit of scary. Sendak, Roald Dahl, even some of the Victorian ones have some terror. Twas ever thus

4.) What are your thoughts so far on Eden and Starling House? Has the author done a good job so far of creating an atmosphere and setting for a good gothic story?

Atmosphere is good, a dying town and a vengeance gone too far... Gothic ticks better than the effort in Salt and Broom

5.) Any favorites so far in our motley cast of characters? Opal, Arthur, Jasper, Bev, and Starling House

Charlotte and Bev

35559 Ashlee, any chance you can make a third post for Hunger Games BR so we can get the bonus points? ☺️
35559 I'd forgotten how rubbish Katniss is at a lot of stuff, probably conflating her with all the perfect ya heroines that followed after this book. I ended up enjoying the reread more than I was expecting to!

I also forgot how little time Snow gets in this book.

35559 I finished two today, and will promise not to finish any more until some time tomorrow. I'm ahead an hour from Uk, so think that makes it 11 my time. Shall save for after lunch to be safe!

35559 Morning from Montenegro!

For the battle I'd go with a hot book that ends in some nice letters - Bothered for RED or the ICE option maybe?

The Games sections are great mixes of action and strategy

Agreed! I had forgotten how early Rue actually died, but I guess she serves to put Katniss into the cooperation frame of mind and primed to save Peeta. Would she have prioritised Peeta over Rue otherwise?
35559 I'm super late, but better that than never!

30%in, Peeta's just switched up and separated from training with Katniss....

Mostly my thoughts are that I get that Katniss is angry and focused on surviving, but if she'd just chill she'd see that there's people wanting to change things more effectively than just raging. I get that Madge and Peeta have more time to think and plot, but that's not stopping me wanting to shake Katniss.
I do also understand why they wouldn't tell her in a million years because she's such a loose cannon, which makes for a great rallying figure but is crap for keeping secrets!

I found a new MOST HATEFUL KU book. If you need one for Idaho still, then Murder at Mistletoe Manor will make you question all your life choices leading to the decision to read - and continue reading - the really terrible no good book.....

(for calibration purposes: worse than Mrs Fix-It, and I'm not even joking you (as my niblings would say))
