I'm liking it so far.
up to chapter 6 (view spoiler)[I'm don't really trust the Darkling and the other Grisha. Their methods are too aggressive in my opinion. And all the rumors about them. There must be some truth about it.
Also I don't trust a monarch who only values beauty. That's just vain. That Grisha girl in chapter 6 really crossed a line for me. She was about to modify Alina's face without her consentment. Worse, she was going to do something to her without even telling her what she was up to. That's not okay in my book. (hide spoiler)]

I like the writing style, too. And it doesn't bother me that it's a bit slow. I quite like it in fact. It allows me sink it all in.

Really? I always thought they were half fish like mermaids, even in greek mythology. Aaaah, the confusion a language can cause !

It's so weird to me that there's such a big difference between the two because in french they are both translated with the same word: sirène. "The Little Mermaid" is thus "La Petite Sirène". I've always thought Sirens and Mermaids were one and the same, and the fact that they were kind or evil creatures was basically the author's choice. For me the two were synonymous, with one word being english and the other refering to the ancient greek name. I never imagined the difference would be more significant than that.
Have you always thought Mermaids and Sirens to be different kinds of creatures? Or, are did you think like me that they were the same?

I'm intrigued by this dark little mermaid retelling. It's been on my radar since it was announced. I'm going to start it tonight.

Favorite character?
I don't know. I feel like I love them all, haha.
I love the two main character, Meg and Simon, obviously. I especially love to see their relationship develop. I love little Sam, too. He's too cute. (view spoiler)[Too bad we didn't see more of him in this book. I missed him (hide spoiler)].
Tess with her super powerful ability. Vlad who always makes me laugh. And I like Erebus too.
And Burke and Monty, as I already explained.
I mean there are just too many great characters to pick a favorite.

I'm 45% into the book (listening to the audiobook so I'm not sure what chapter that is).

(view spoiler)[I'm always so frustrated and angry at Ron when I read this book. It's such a big betrayal. It's so obvious Harry is suffering from the bashing by other students and that he doesn't want all the attention. Ron's attitude is just selfish. How can he believe Harry would enter the competition without telling him? argh ! Book 4 ruined Ron for me.

Rita, too, is such an annoying character. I really can't stand her. what a nuisance. I agree with Deanne here, it's a wonder her articles are published in what passes for a serious newspaper in the wizarding world. Her articles belong to a gossip magasine. Nowhere else. (hide spoiler)]

Burke : (view spoiler)[ I love this man, and Monty too. Burke really has a clearer image of the situation between the Others and the humans. He knows what is at stakes. Monty doesn't know as much, but he's willing to try and understand both sides. We really need more people like them to prevent a stupid war happening.
I also like how Burke sneekily helped Monty research that guy his ex-wife is dating. He's a really nice guy :) (hide spoiler)]
