I am loving this!! Crime/thriller/mystery are my favourite genres. I won't be around for the start, but will be online about 12 hours after the start. I have 3 books in mind for this week to read and they'll go perfectly with the list of words. Do we give our planned books or do we just read and list?

😀"
Nikk, I am with you. Coffee is my friend.
Im ok with both too

I'm so excited to join you all!! Here is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I have already added some books to the shelf that I've read. I'm going to work out how this game works and join in full throttle! :)
I'm in Australia, so my responses will likely be delayed when it's daytime for you all.

Synopsis:
The 2:00 a.m. call is the first time Lexie Vidler has heard her sister’s voice in years. Annie is a drug addict, a thief, a liar—and in trouble, again. Lexie has always bailed Annie out, given her money, a place to sleep, sent her to every kind of rehab. But this time, she’s not just strung out—she’s pregnant and in premature labor. If she goes to the hospital, she’ll lose custody of her baby—maybe even go to prison. But the alternative is unthinkable.
As weeks unfold, Lexie finds herself caring for her fragile newborn niece while her carefully ordered life is collapsing around her. She’s in danger of losing her job, and her fiancé only has so much patience for Annie’s drama. In court-ordered rehab, Annie attempts to halt her downward spiral by confronting long-buried secrets from the sisters’ childhood, ghosts that Lexie doesn’t want to face. But will the journey heal Annie, or lead her down a darker path?
Both candid and compassionate, Before I Let You Go explores a hotly divisive topic and asks how far the ties of family love can be stretched before they finally break.

6. We are halfway through the book. I have to admit I was struggling with the first chapters, but now it has got better. How do you like the book so far?
Yeah I really struggled with the language around how they speak to each other. It's getting a bit easier now, I'm not putting as much effort into it either.
7. "It didn't fit that anyone who liked birds would be mean", chap. 15. Do you agree with Kya on this? There are many similar statements with other animals, e.g. "Never trust a man who doesn't like dogs". What animal would you put in such a statement?
I think Kya lives by animals and nature, she's really in touch with it. I don't know if this is true in real life. I know several people in history who were great with their animals, but were animals in real life
8. In chapter 16 we learn more about Kya's parents and their marriage. Did it change your feelings about Maria leaving her children?
I don't think I can judge anyone who has gone through so much trauma. I feel for a mum who thinks this is the only solution to her family's problem.
9. Now we know a bit more about Chase. What do you think has happened? How did Chase die?
He sounds like a total womanizer who had many enemies. I don't know how he died, but it might have been suicide in the end
10. Do you think Kya will meet people who left her? Her mother, brother and sisters, Tate?
I hope she does, but I wonder how that would go after so many years of separation.

Chapter 1 through 12
1.) What made you decide to read this book? Have you read any of her nonfiction books? If so, any you'd recommend?
I had seen some great reviews for it, but then when it became BOTM, I wanted to join in. Never read anything by this author before
2.) I think the author has a way with describing nature that makes it come alive off the page in a manner many authors don't seem to be able to do. I feel as though the marsh is as important a character in the story as Kya. How does Owens descriptions make you feel about the marsh and do you see it as another major character of the story?
I actually found her language quite hard to read as she's trying to write it phonetically with the Southern American twang. I found it harder to get into the book, because of it.
3.) Can you imagine being on your own, not being able to read at 10? Why do you think her brother didn't take her with him? Do you think Jumpin' and other marsh dwellers know she is completely alone? Think her dad is coming back?
I think Jumpin' is starting to suspect Kya is alone in the marsh. I think all the siblings and the mother have literally had the spirit beaten out of them and can barely survive by themselves, that's why Kya wasn't taken by any of them.
4.) Why is it that people who have the least always seem willing to help the most? The struggling people of Coloured Town, in a single day, help Kya more than the way more well off white people ever even considered doing. They called a 6 year old swamp trash to her face, ignored crime because 'why stop rats from killing rats', and even preacher wives called her dirty and blamed her for spreading disease. Do you think this is an unfair characterization of our society? Does reading this make you take a second look at some of your own judgments of people?
It didn't make me question my own behaviours. I think overall I'm pretty tolerant of different cultures, etc.
5.) We know only know a snippet about the crime and a wee bit about the victim. What are your guesses as to how this part of the story line will intertwine with Kya's?
They'll blame Kya for it as they don't know her and don't trust 'marsh people' anyway. For them it's either the 'colored' people or the marsh people.
