Day Two: First -The Numbers Tour

5. During the making of Daisy’s first album, I appreciated her quote, “Being given things versus earning them. I was so used to being given things I didn’t know how important it is for your soul to earn them”. Do you think that Daisy will continue to think this way and work hard for the music she wants considering her increased drug use and drinking?
I really don’t know. It seems like she hasn’t really changed much but we are getting this as an interview so the characters are telling us about the past when they have hindsight that changes the way you see things.

6. During the studio session for Honeycomb, Karen sums it up best as indicating that Billy wrote it as a song of security, and Daisy changed it to a song of insecurity. What do you think of the continuing duality between Billy and Daisy? Will it be good or bad for them moving forward?
Daisy seems kind of out of it so I really don’t know. Billy is clearly struggling and it seems like he doesn’t share the struggle and that makes it difficult for the rest of the band and for Daisy to get him or help him. As for their distance we already see that changing some. I think the change will be bad it’s a story and we know they don’t stay together as a band.

7. Daisy is changing the dynamic of The Six when she joins the band
and states, "You’re only in charge of me as much as I’m in charge of you." Do you think this equality approach is going to work?
I think rather than creating equality you are going to have a two headed monster that stomps on anything and everyone in its way.

8. I'm a complete sucker for stories that have lyrics in them, are you enjoying the lyrics in this story? Do you have any favorites so far?
Until this question I hadn’t really thought about song lyrics in books but now that I think about it there are quite a few books with lyrics and they weren’t about bands but someone happened to sing a song and part of it was in the story. I can’t say any of the lyrics in here have been anything amazing to me. I think I’d have to hear a song to really know.

The x would be difficult, and I admit I’m very interested in what we would get.

I do not have anything that works for “u” or genre shifters. I would prefer a re-spin.

DQ Day 1

1. This is a different type of book than I usually read. The interview formatting is interesting. What do you think of the formatting so far? Is anyone having trouble following it? I am reading it, but it reads like a podcast transcript to me so far.
The formatting is a bit strange for me too. I'm finding it easy to read, but it also isn't holding my attention for any amount of time.

2. A main focus of the book seems to be the agency of the women in the music business. The two quotes that stuck out to me were “ I am not a muse. I am the somebody,” and “men often think they deserve a sticker for treating women like people.” What are your thoughts on this theme and quotes?
That first quote really stuck out to me as well. However, I didn't get that women in the music industry was the theme of the story. I would say it is sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Then again, I'm not that far and I don't feel like I really know any of the women in the story yet.

3. Daisy’s parents are absent and extremely unobservant. She is very young when introduced to drugs, alcohol, and sex. The interview style presents what is really horrific in Daisy’s description of parental neglect, drug use at a very young age and statutory rape, as far as I can tell, in a fairly detached fashion. Anyone else react this way to this section?
It did feel very removed, but I actually appreciated the detached nature. It happened but it isn't the story.

4. The end of this section focuses on Billy and Camila. What do you think of their relationship and the choices that Camila makes? Do you think Billy will stay sober?
I think their relationship isn't based off of a good foundation. I certainly wouldn't want to be part of it. I think Camila is trying to make the best of a bad situation. I really don't think Billy will stay sober if he stays in music.

I’ve got all my books turned in for the week. I am hoping to be able to get through more next week.

I think that yes the books for the mini are also the books we use for the spell out.

Dracula would also work for a few of the other 5pt words.

Ugh. I kind of wish we had been one of the teams that got a respin for a genre like suspense or horror. That being said. I’m currently reading at least two books may be more that will not work for the word sand. Looks like I’m going to be having to rethink what I finish tomorrow.
I started listening to Dracula last time we had sand so maybe that will help us...I don’t know the 10pt words/names so not sure what they are from.

Karen, I’m curious if you read Daughter of Smoke and Bone as well. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Strange the Dreamer series but I was underwhelmed by Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Do you think it is better? Is this series worth a try?

I’m not sure how we are on Suspense books but I just got the next Ty and Zane novel and I’m pretty sure that is MPG suspense.

My weekend has been relaxed. I didn’t get as much reading as I thought I would yesterday-I spent about an hour trying to decided what to read next. I should start Daisy Jones & The Six but not yet I think. I’m curious to see if others like it though.

I’ve got a hold on a suspense book and hoping that comes in soon. The one I have on hand doesn’t work for our word. Part of the reason i couldn’t decided what to read.

I’ve got the adult July book of the month. I’m planning on reading. I’m not sure if it will fit our word for the week though.

I’ve started a couple longer audiobooks with holds coming in all at once. I don’t know that I will finish them this week. I haven’t added anything I currently reading to the ss as I am not sure what I’m going to get to reading this week.
