I know! We had a channel called TCM a couple of years ago. They would broadcast non-stop classic movies/series. My mother and I had a hard time leaving tv because we loved it so much, that's when I met Errol Flynn :) But then they cancelled it. Now we have like 100 channels and there's nothing on tv *cue Bruce Springsteen* Luckily I have Shogun on DVD ;)

That is sad news. I watched Thorn Birds with my mother in French version years ago, the series title always makes me sad. Lol agreed Sheila & Lauren!
I liked him in his role as Aramis and I think he also played king Louis XIV in the D'Artagnan Romances adaptations which is one of the best TV adaptations imo. But one of my favourites is still Shogun.

I'm almost halfway through.

I'm enjoying all the information I get about forensics medicine. It's quite different from the historical mysteries I've read so far. It doesn't read like a fast paced crime fiction or something. It feels the book is more focused on how the criminal mind is shaped & works. (view spoiler)[I liked the chapters where Laszlo talks about the criminal not necessarily being 'mad' by their norm, but the culprit can be someone that they perceive as 'normal' and perfectly integrated in society. (hide spoiler)] Caleb Carr does a good job of evoking what forensics medicine represented then and how it was perceived.

(view spoiler)[The only thing I'm slightly annoyed about is that the story is told from Moore's pov. I expected it would be from Laszlo, I hope for a couple of chapters from his pov. Also the story is told in retrospect and sometimes we are explicitly reminded of that so that can be quite irritating.

I really like the addition of Sara. I'm glad she has a prominent role in the story, I hope we will see more of her. (hide spoiler)]

I notice that I'm going quite slowly through the book, just like its story imo. I wish they would go to the point, and we would get more clues. I'm trying to guess the culprit here :)

Hey guys! I wasn't much present lately but fear not I have been very busy slaying nasty creatures. So I'm here to rest and recuperate for a while, that last goblin was pretty persistent. Also I'm a bit tired of always eating smoked sewer rat. *goes to the bar* Cider for me please! *checks out the menu card*

Completely agree Rhonda. It is rather descriptive and it takes time to get used to it. I think the story finally grabbed me. The opening chapter confused me a bit at first (view spoiler)[but it makes sense now that everything is told restrospectively. It's well done in that as a reader I'm curious what 'all the fuss' at the beginning was about. Why all the secrecy around the murder case. (hide spoiler)]

I'm looking forward to get to know Laszlo a bit better. I'm really interested in his medical field as an alienist. I hope we get to see him at work soon.

It felt more like a literary fiction to me, the post-apocalyptic setting was just a mere afterthought and didn't make sense. I understand what the author tried to do, I really do, she wanted to show the importance and hardships arts and culture in general has to face. Unfortunately I didn't think it was well done, and I was mostly bored. I analyzed it, and at the end of the day there isn't much left when it comes to characterization and plot. Oh well, better luck next time :) I'm doing the GR Choice Awards Challenge, so far I've read I think 7 of them from various categories, and only one was good imo (and the book was a sequel in a series I really like). Next up is The Martian!

I already ranted in my review space. Just saying that I didn't enjoy this book, it's overrated, I don't understand the hype and it was a chore to read. It was shallow, plotless, and the characters felt disconnected. Also I didn't enjoy the repeatedly switching timelines. Disappointed in the GR Choice Awards again.
