35559 No problem, Laura. I can wait. I won't be able to pick mine up until sometime next week and then I have a bit to read it. We don't have a long line for print books in general and I should be able to renew it if needed. If not, I'll buy it. I expect I'll like it enough.

I also have tons of books to read. I still have a bunch I purchased and I always find a few more than I planned on at the library when I go.
35559 My book finally came in! It's in transit, I will have it shortly and am looking forward to starting in September (which is really, really soon).
35559 Laura, sounds fun but I have too many others to read right now. Let me know how you like it!
35559 I thought I would check in. My libraries copies are still on order, so I can just buy the audiobook if everyone else is ready. Just let me know! Hope you are both enjoying reading something else.

Statics and Dynamics.
35559 My TBR list grows faster than I can read. I try. As long as I'm reading, I'm happy. Will slow down here soon. Classes are about to start and I'm teaching a large class for the first time on a subject I haven't dealt with in years.

Oh, and Dark Roads looks really interesting. Will have to add this and happy to buddy read later!
35559 It looks like at least some of the books have just come in, so hopefully I will have a copy soon. My library ordered 40 copies and I'm #31 on the wait list. If it takes too long, start without me and I'll start it after I finish the book 1 part of 1Q84.

I have a ton of books on my TBR list but no order. Right now I'm trying to read the ones I bought earlier but haven't read. Still have 2 NK Jemison books, The Silence of the Girls, and The Lost Book of Adana Moreau.

I was busy reading things for Tower Teams (and found a few gems) and picking up whatever looked good at the library (finishing The Other Emily)

35559 This was really fun, and my first time playing as well. Thank you all so much for being a great team. I am sure I will see many of you around in future challenges.

35559 Finished this one. Short, but still points, added to SS. Still House

35559 Tina, glad the pets are ok. Definitely need to focus on that!

Can't believe it is almost over. Essentially over for me since it is unlikely I'll finish anything else. It's been fun!

35559 Finished.
The Girl from Widow Hills by Megan Miranda
Jul 27, 2021 05:52AM

35559 Is there something that we need, or maybe want a back up for? I've started a new book but can switch and read something (as long as it isn't too long).

35559 Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett
Finished.
35559 DQ Day 5
starts: "Vimes landed in damp straw..."

17. So the dungeon was not quite what I expected. And Lord Vetinari was utterly relaxed while being supposedly incarcerated, and waited on by rats no less. Who would have thought? What do you make of the man?

He really thinks ahead. He knew that this was a possibility and planned for it. How brilliant. The rats was a twist I wasn't expecting.

18. Turns out that Errol was the hero everyone had been waiting for! Interesting pairing though. Do you think we're ever going to see Errol again? Maybe accompanied by some offspring?
I hope so! Errol was fantastic. I do wonder about offspring....

19. Lady Ramkin is a force to be reckoned with! Defies the city dressed in nothing but a nightshirt... Vimes is quite right in thinking that society won't know what hit it. Has your opinion of the lady changed perhaps? The first mention of her was to call her "mental" and then she was about to be sacrificed to the dragon, a dragon she then defends. Do you think she really is mental or just a woman who is very sure about what is right and wrong?

Isn't that what society has often done to women who don't conform? They are labeled crazy and locked up or declared witches and burned. I love her!

20. Overall, was it an ending you expected? Did you enjoy the book? Was there a favourite scene or quote maybe?

I expected some of it but not all of it, so nicely done. I did like the book, although it did take me a bit to get into it. There were so many different things to love. I do think all the conversation about million to one odds was my favourite, especially since that is what won in the end!
35559 DQs - Day 4

13. Nobby, Colon, Vimes, Carrot – they all sure do have their charms. Who’s your favorite member of the City Watch and why?

Probably Carrot. He's a crazy tall 'dwarf' who is super naive, in a good way. I suspect he is actually long lost royalty.

14. Carrot – I’ve been really enjoying his letters to his mother, especially the PS. Is he ever going to return to the dwarves and reunite with Minty? How would you see that going down?
I can't imagine him with Minty. The life spans alone make it difficult, but part of me wished. I hope he will find someone perfect for him.

15. Will Colon, Nobby and Carrot succeed with their plan? Do they even have a plan? Or is a hero going to show up to save the day after all?
They have a plan? I mean, maybe, but probably not. Vimes is going that way too, so maybe him. But I'm betting on Errol, probably with Vimes. But I almost forgot the Librarian. He has to figure into it too. So, not 1 hero but all the guards together? (The librarian is one now too!)

16. There’s quite a few things going on that could be tied up (or not) by the end of the book. Other than a potential solution to the dragon problem, what else do you expect from the ending?
Vimes and Sybill end up together. To find out Carrot was Royalty. And for the Librarian to play a part in some way.

I'm not sure I can fit in another, probably a quick one but not positive. There are at least 2 books on the list that have been read.

I read The Galaxy, and the Ground Within wich is tied for #19. It was used for Jackonary. I know at least 1 person read Equal Rites, it is #28.
35559 DQs- Day 3

9. If you were confronted with Lord Mountjoy Quickfang Winterforth IV’s ominously rumbling tummy and the prospect of more dragon fire, how would you react?
Not sure I would have stuck around as long as the mob leader did!

I think I would have backed away slowly. Then run.

10. If you witnessed a massive dragon being vanquished in one sword hit, would you entirely believe it or do you think you may hold suspicions on the “neatness”? I think I would wonder about the lack of dragon lumps.
I think if I saw a large dragon vanquished in one sword hit that I would be thrilled and surprised. If a huge dragon showed up I would think just about anything was possible.

11. This section cemented my love for Lady Sybil, with her no-nonsense stern reproach of the dragon. If she had maintained eye contact, do you think her approach would have worked?
I like to think so. She is quite the Lady.

12. Since the beginning of the book, has your opinion on Captain Vimes changed? If so, why?
I'm still deciding on Vimes. Not sure it has changed, I did think that this was a likely change in course for him. The sobering up part at least, maybe not the Lady Sybil or dragon part. I particularly liked when he started doing forensics work in the square! I finally got the link to police procedurals there.
35559 DQs - Day 2

5. In this section, TP is shedding some light (or dark?) on the Patrician's character. What is your opinion about him? Would you prefer him to rule your country instead of the "real" politicians?(A question to DW Veterans: do you remember any other books where V's aversion to mime artists is mentioned or we are given an explanation why?)

While the real politicians seem useless, the Patrician seems scarier.

6. What about Lady Sybil as the "heroine" or female MC of the book? She certainly seems to be the complete opposite of how "classical heroines" are represented in fantasy or other books. Have you met her counterpart / someone very like her in non-DW books or films? Would you get a pet dragon if you had the chance?

I think I am really going to like Sybill. We need better heroines. Can't think any in books or films, but I suspect I have even if rare. I love the idea of a dragon but would probably not enjoy having all my things getting scorched. Maybe the really cute one that can't fly or make fire but is really smart. The 'defective' one, which would be my speed.

7. If you are familiar with the detective fiction/mystery genre, do you think Guards! Guards! has been following a similar structure in its idiosyncratic way so far?
I do love this genre, but I have a hard time thinking of this book in those terms. It really is its own genre. It is definitely having fun with it though.

8. Maybe it's too early to ask this question, but I am not a character to able to resist the temptation of it. Please forgive me.
So, any ideas, who which actors/actress would you choose as Lord Vetinari / Sam Vimes / Carrot / Lady Sybil. ...etc if you were a casting director?

I'm really bad at actors, so I will defer. Most of the people I think of are too old. I'll have to think more...
