35559 Oh, then I’ll be switching some of my planned selections to specifically focus more on Os and Ls (since we’ll be having to double up in each spell out). Question, with hyphenated author last names, do you go by the first name in the hyphen?
Jun 07, 2020 06:10PM

35559 @Louise, thanks for catching that! I’ll find something else to replace it. Also, what did you mean by Max 10 Books for Genre Tags. Is that 10 books per tag or ten books total for all tags? And is that per person or per group? Last question, can the tags be reused more than once?
Jun 07, 2020 08:03AM

35559 @Christina, haha, thanks! And THANK YOU for reorganizing the tasks list into categories - it has made things so much easier!

35559 It seemed that the most popular genres in this group are romance, fantasy, and thriller, so here are some favorites from those genres:

The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez, How to Walk Away by Katherine Center, OR Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert - All of these novels feature strong women who overcome chronic/sudden difficult physical conditions (infertility, paralysis, & fibromyalgia, respectively) and find their happily ever after. I laughed and cried as all of these heroines journeyed towards self-acceptance and body-love. For my fellow audiobook listeners, I listened to the first two on audio and loved the narrators; as for the last book, I just didn't enjoy the narrator as much and ended up reading it. [TFZ = 372 pgs; C - Character: Josh Copeland, A - Author: Abby Jimenez; #48, #56, #67, #118, #130, #149, #166, #175, #199] [HTWA = 302 pgs; M - Character: Margaret Jacobsen, C - Author: Katherine Center; #48, #56, #105, #117, #143, #149, #175] [GALCB = 373 pgs; M - Character: Red Morgan; #48, #56, #57, #67, #98, #118, #130, #158, #175, #199]

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas - If you love Cassandra Clare & Holly Black, you'll love HOEAB. It has everything - romance, adventure, mystery - and one of the best written female friendships I've read (in fact, the theme of friendship in the novel was epic). It made me cry and it made me laugh, but most importantly, it took me into another world for a little bit. I had read some of Maas' books in the past, and found them to be enjoyable but HOEAB is on another level! So I'd say if you read her in the past and didn't enjoy her but were willing to try her once more, read HOEAB. [799 pgs; M & S - Author: Sarah J. Maas, C - Series: Crescent City, A - Character: Hunt Athalar; #56, #57, #67, #82, #105, #118, #122, #128, #158, #162, #164, #175, #158)

I would have recommended City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong, but Rina beat me to it! Instead, since I don't really read many thriller books (COTL actually made me realize recently I just enjoy police procedurals so much more than domestic thrillers), I'll second it and recommend an urban fantasy for the Ilona Andrews fans, Grave Witch by Kalayna Price - strong heroine, hot love interests, fun world building, and intriguing mystery. [325 pgs; A & C - Character: Alex Craft; #23, #56, #67, #149, #161, #162, #164, #175]

35559 Great job, everyone! This definitely had me reading!

35559 Question: am I able to add books to tags I know would fit before we start? Or is that considered cheating?
Jun 06, 2020 07:26AM

35559 I've read both The Ten Thousand Doors of January (a really cute portal fantasy) and Something in the Water and found them both enjoyable!

35559 Hello~ I am a librarian in Ohio (Midwest US). This is my first time playing Wheelathon, but I've been in other challenges (with this group and with others). I love challenges for their ability to both encourage me to finish books in my TBR and also to get me reading things I wouldn't have otherwise.

My favorite genres are romance and fantasy/science fiction, but I read a little bit of everything, especially best sellers (occupational hazard, haha).

My shelf is take-the-wheel.

I haven't read Gulliver's Travels, but I plan to one day as it is my father's favorite book! (Do we get extra points if we read our team name, haha?)

I'm also signed up for the BOM, and put in for DQ!

35559 Just double checking, is the page minimum then 100 for books?
35559 I'm trying to get my hands on the audiobook - if I manage, I'll join in!

UPDATE: I just saw Talia's post above (thanks!). If y'all still need someone else to DQ, I can do so as well! (Team Gulliver's Travels)
35559 Chosen Ones (The Chosen Ones, #1) by Veronica Roth

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth

The first novel written for an adult audience by the mega-selling author of the Divergent franchise: five twenty-something heroes famous for saving the world when they were teenagers must face even greater demons—and reconsider what it means to be a hero . . . by destiny or by choice.

A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.

Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended.

That makes sense, thank you! Second question, are there only two teams (like in traditional quidditch)?

35559 Hello, what is the start date? (Sorry if I overlooked!)

35559 Hello, I've never done this before, but it sounds fun!

It takes me between a day and three days to finish a book, and I believe I might function best as a Chaser, Beater, or Reserve!

In a forty-eight hour period (with limited sleep), at my max, I could probably finish three or four 300-400 page books. Of course, the shorter the books, the more I'll be able to finish. I also have access to a variety of titles through digital services. With those two qualities, I'll take whichever role whichever team would take me in!
