@Vi, perhaps we won’t be the only ones to want to kick off the Doorstopper Club quite early in the month 🤞.

I’m just a little concerned because of how long 11.22.63 is. I’d rather buddy read it if possible team :) :) - but I am a slow reader, so wanted to make sure it’s okay to start before the DQ dates or I may not be able to finish.
Cris, those Us are tricky. I have one U book but won’t claim just yet as already have a few books planned (including aforementioned doorstopper!). If those tasks are still there later on, I might give one of them a shot with The Upside of Unrequited.

Today, I finished the 500-599 we agreed on. Now back to Holes, then onto Out of the Dark, for the Chipmunk challenge - book you can’t wait to read!!
I also have two questions re BOMs:
- when can we start reading 11.22.63?
- what’s the thing about participation tokens and how do they contribute to TTX?
Cheers and have great week-end everyone!

I really enjoy Sarah Waters' tbh - I feel she puts alot into her craft, and studies the period she's writing for really well. I've read Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet and both conjured vivid atmospheric scenes and developed interesting characters. My fave was Fingersmith, it's more suggestive and delicate than the rather brazen Tipping the Velvet (such an important work at the time though!).
Cut a long story short: Fingersmith definitely a nice place to start - hope you enjoy it!

Wishing you speedy healing and good pain relief in the meantime!

I understand what you mean about some challenges giving you more or less freedom - good luck with crossing that finish line!

Thank you Suzanne for the regular updates, they’re really neat! 🙂

What did you think about the « Hornet’s Nest », Leslie Ann?
x

Good pick for the X -🤞 that someone has it.

@Leslie Ann, the Millenium trilogy is one of my faves - hope The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest works for you! And American Gods... :)
@Vi at first I'd read 2500 pages, and I thought woa - but 1000 pages is a jolly good start :). I've started The Night Watch which is also a 500 pager, I'll just wait to see whether to put it on hold for June 1.
@Kirsten & Suzanne, shame about the grays but we can do this :)
@DuoLingo fans, wow - happy learning to you all, sounds really good - I should give it a shot!

Really looking forward to the Chipmunk mini-challenge - sounds fun! :)
Is there a convenient way to compare a list (e.g. 2013) to a given shelf (e.g. _on-my-shelf)? I found myself scrolling through the first page, and not entirely sure I haven't missed any tbh - there's a 'compare books' links to other people but I can't seem to find anything similar for the list. Any help much appreciated.
I've got a few but it seems early to decide - guessing we'll want to finish the first ten by June 1 if possible?
The X author sounds difficult...

First off, verifying the word count through arbookfind.com is the exact right thing to do. Those books will both work. I used to read "Holes" to my students. Hope you enjoy it!

I definitely need a change after Doctor Moreau - I'm a little disappointed by the ending :(. Edit: My cousin is a teacher and said Holes was good too!
Wondering how others felt about it!

Thank you Lisa :) - have done just that.

Thank you, that's what I've done :) - I thought there was a dropdown or something but must have misread.

15. Welcome to the penultimate set of chapters! A lot of revelations came to light in this set of chapters: did any of them surprise you? If so, which ones?
I can't say I was really surprised by any of the revelations unfortunately.
16. Montgomery and Carlota finally seem like they are going to make love but Montgomery stops this from happening. Do you think he made the right choice? Why or why not? Also do you think they’ll still get together in the end?
Yes, I think he made the right choice - for several reasons - including how drunk they both were. I don't think they'll get together in the end because of the age difference and I think he's more of an adult figure to her - but I might be in for a surprise!
17. It looks like Dr. Moreau is going to die by the end of the book. In the original novel and adaptations Dr. Moreau is a villainous figure. Do you think he is portrayed as a villain in this book or do you think he has redeeming qualities?
I find him to be a sad soul to be honest and not as sinister as I would have liked.
18. Carlota is given a key to the laboratory. What do you think she will find there? Also any predictions for the end of the book?
Well, there isn't much to find anymore really. Or is there? There might be a twist coming here? I'm hoping for a big horror finale but also doubting that it will happen now we've come so far without a whiff of horror.
