DQs Day 2: The Penultimate Update - Peppermint Tea (39%)6. Were you surprised that Nora's second choice was related to her cat? What did you think of the outcome?
Not really, since it was one of the last things that happened before she died. It was sad of course, but I think Nora appreciated knowing it wasn't her fault the cat died (which it wasn't in the first place either in my opinion)
7. How did the reality of Nora's Australia line up with what you imagined it would be like?
There must be several Australia lines that had Izzy still alive? That's all I have to say about it😂
8. What did you think about the similarities between Nora's life in Australia versus her original life?
I guess some things are "meant" to happen? Maybe she has to go back further to get to the root of the anxiety/depression?
9. On the surface, Nora's life with a swimming career seems to be the most successful so far. Do you think the positives will outweigh the negatives this time around?
So far it's better I guess, but she's still depressed for some unknown reason. And the thing about Portugal that either we or Nora know about, or something else, might be a deal-breaker for her?
10. Any predictions for how Nora's speech will go in the next chapter?
The only thing I'm wondering is why she's not more nervous? She's about to be on stage for like an hour talking about a life she knows nothing about. And she has stated previously that she doesn't like the attention on her. I would be a ball of nerves.

1. Were you planning to read this book before it became a BOM? If so, what drew you to it?Yes, at some point in the distant future. I was apprehensive because it seemed like a book that maybe wouldn't fit me really well. But it was very different from now I thought it would be, and I'm really liking it!
2. What do you think of Matt Haig’s writing style (and those short chapters!) and how he has set the story up so far?
I really like it. Short chapters make the book go by so much faster. The book is a little all over the place, just like Nora's life.
3. What are your thoughts on Nora? Are you attached to her yet?
Yes, I get really easily attached. I think she has a sense of humor, even though she is sad and depressed.
4. If you were somehow able to, would you want to see all of the different outcomes that could have played out in your own life? Or would you rather just leave things as they are without ever knowing?
Probably not. Depends on my situation I guess. As of now, I would have no need to see all my alternative lives.
5. What did you think about Nora’s first glimpse at a road not taken? Were you surprised by which book she chose to open first or by how quickly it disappointed her?
I'm not really surprised by the choice as it was mention several times earlier in the book. I don't think I'm surprised by how it disappointed her. She already left him once before.
You see, doing one thing differently is very often the same as doing everything differently.

I have added everything to the SS :)
13. Simon was kept very much a mystery character throughout the book. What is your opinion of him? How will he be able to support Esk in the future (or will he)?I liked Simon. He seemed like a really smart guy, and hopefully, he'll be able to teach the other wizards a few things about all the stuff he knows about. I think he will be there for Esk, but I don't know exactly how he will help.
14. The meeting between Granny and the Archchancellor and their actions afterwards are a pivotal part of the book. What were your impressions?
I loved those scenes. There were really funny. It was cool to see both of them accept the other one more as they spent time together.
15. With duality of witchcraft vs. wizardry being one of the main themes, what do you think about the ending? Was it satisfyingly concluded?
It was a cool battle they had there. It looked like between them they agreed that Granny would have won with her witchcraft, but as the battle didn't have a winner it's hard to say. It would also depend on the wizard and witch as well.
16. How did you rate the book?
If you are new to Terry Pratchett, do you consider checking out more of his books (NOT just because of BOM points :)?
If you are familiar with his books/a fan - any changes in your earlier impressions/opinion?
I rated it 3 stars. I'm going to check out more of his Discworld books, but I definitely think I will prefer some of the series above others. I am having a little bit of a hard time getting used to his writing style, but hopefully I'll get there eventually.
Finished

DQs - Day 39 . What do you think on the creatures from the dungeon dimensions? Do you find them creepy?
I think they seem creepy. We haven't heard too much about them yet, so I'm excited to learn more about them!
10. I enjoyed the Esk’s thoughts about being both witch and wizard and wanting to defend the one to the other. Do you sympathize with this view (more in general than in specific regards to magic fields)?
Yes, I sympathize with this view. I'm a person with few very strong opinions. I often see the logic and reasons behind many things, even if I sometimes prefer one over the others.
11. Why do you think Esk’s magic did not work?
Hm. Either see got a stage fright of some sort, or maybe the staff wanted her all to itself?
12. Esk is supposed to be precocious but also nine years old. Do you think she acts in a way you could see a nine-year-old acting?
That depends on the nine-year-old, I guess. I probably would not have acted that way when I was nine. I was too shy.
As a member of Team Ook, the bonus question is: Is not the librarian wonderful and would you want to be turned back in his place?
I love the librarian! I hope we get more of him. I would probably have wanted to change back to a human, though.

Starting with a Bonus question...“They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it is not one half so bad as a lot of ignorance.” (Granny said)
First off, who are “they”? I have always wanted to know. Secondly, do you agree with “them”?
I guess "they" is like everyone, as in "we, all of us"? I have no idea but that's what I got out of it. Sorry to not have a very insightful answer here, haha.
5. Esk went ahead and did not follow Granny’s advice, and thought since she had a feeling she could get into the bird’s brain, then why not do it.
When you were a kid, did you jump off the swing, or touch the hot burner? If so, give us examples.
Do you think she learned something from it, or are we looking at shades of her future University life?
I did definitely jump off the swing but was never told not to. I also got stuck in trees a lot, but it was mostly my shoes that got stuck between branches and not myself.
It looks like she learned from it, but maybe she will forget about how frightened she was as time goes by.
6. What do you think of Hilda and her version of Headology? What do you think of Headology in general?
I think it's cool. I've gotten more into it this past year and I find it really interesting.
7. Esk finds herself on a moving barge. Loved loved loved the resume of talents beyond washing and sweeping that Esk rattles off in an attempt to stay on the boat. What skills could you bring to the barge?
Oh wow, like not much. I suck at cooking, but I could probably wash and prepare the food I guess? Peel potatoes and whatnot. I can knit too, but not very well.
8. Speaking of the barge, what do you think of Esk’s decision to just leave Granny? Did she mean to leave on her own adventure, or was it an accident? Do you think her matter of fact attitude is a product of her magic, or just her personality or upbringing?
I would not just run away from my family in a strange bigger town at the age of nine, haha. I think it was an accident that she ended up sleeping somewhere that would have moved when she woke up, but at the same time, she didn't look like she was really opposed after she woke up either. I think her attitude is a mix of growing up the youngest of only boys (I can attest, lol). The magic probably also have something to do with it, as she gets a lot of help from the staff when things maybe should have been harder for her.
1. If you are new or relatively new to Discworld, what do you think of Pratchett’s world and writing style so far? For more experienced Pratchett readers, what are your favorite things about his writing style or Discworld in general?I'm relatively new and it's something to get used to. No chapters and lots of jokes. I have had quite a hard time, only reading around 20-30 pages per day. I'm still undecided if his books are something for me.
2. So we have our plucky heroine Esk and her witchy mentor Granny Weatherwax. What do you think of our two main characters and their relationship with each other?
Esk growing up with only brothers seems like a girl with plenty of backbone. It doesn't look like they have any sort of relationship with each other previous to Granny starting to teach Esk about magic.
3. A major theme is witch magic vs. wizard magic (and women vs. men), and I can’t wait to learn more about these different magical theories and world views. What do you think of this dynamic, and which type of magic are you more drawn to?
If you haven't read any Discworld books yet, you don't really get much information about the wizard kind of magic. We only hear a little bit from Granny, who is somewhat biased, haha. But I'm excited to learn more about the different types of magic and how they work. I think I'm drawn to both for different reasons.
4. Oh dear. Esk went a bit too far with the borrowing. What do you think is going to happen next? And what will Granny say or do?
Granny will hopefully fix her up and probably give her a piece of her mind. It's difficult to tell with Pratchett though. Anything can happen.
Bonus: I am really enjoying Pratchett’s wit so far. What is your favorite quote from this first bit? Mine is:
“What’s an elephant?”
“A kind of badger,” said Granny. She hadn’t maintained forest-credibility for forty years by ever admitting ignorance.
There are too many good to choose from. I love this one though.
I have a few questions. Some of these might have been answered before. If we want to read a BOM, do we add our own name to the "readers"-cell in the SS? I think it's cell L. Or do we tell you here, and then you add to the SS? ☺️
And how do I link a specific comment? This is for the DQs. I can't find any descriptions of it😭

Yes very true, thank you! I didn't even think of that. I didn't even notice it in The Light Fantastic 🙄
I loved both the book and the movie! The start of the movie was quite similar to the book, but then it started changing. But I really enjoyed both and would totally recommend!
