33903 Week 2: Ghosts
Prudence (The Custard Protocol, #1) by Gail Carriger
Book: Prudence by Gail Carriger
Date read: 04. Apr. 2016.
Rating: 3.5 stars

Prudence is a sequel to the The Parasol Protectorate series. I was looking forward to it.

Likes:
+ The kids are all grown up. In Timeless Prudence, Percy and Prim are all toddlers, but here they are adults and up for a much higher level of mischief. I loved that we have new set of characters while old (and loved) characters appear as secondary now.
+ Set on a flying ship/dirigible and in India. Setting was exotic, unusual and exciting.
+ New kinds of paranormal creatures are introduced.
+ Some thing never change- while some grew old (and some didn't). Like Lord Akeldama's plotting and Prudence's tendency to cause chaos wherever she appears.

Dislikes:
- Humor was ... lacking? ... less there? There were some funny puns, but quirkiness from The Parasol Protectorate series was missing.
- TSTL decisions. All of the main characters were blind for the obvious and were not able to realize some basic facts. It was really annoying at times.

Prudence was a cute and quick read. But I was missing the humor of original series. The sequel promises another exotic setting, so I will read it, although the characters were annoyingly blind at times.

BTW If you are wondering, yes this series can be read without reading The Parasol Protectorate series, but you will be missing on a lot of world-building and won't get some subtle events and character relations. And why would you skip it, it's fun?!

33903 I finished Prudence and will post review soon. It's spring aka. flu season and my kid is over-achiever who has to catch every virus he can. :/

33903 Well I used to work as GUI web developer (part of the team that made web applications), but then I got pregnant and quit my job. Now I am mom and housewife. But my kid just got 2 year old and started going to daycare, so I hope I will go back to work soon.

What do you do Cheri? (Sorry if you already told us and I didn't notice).

33903 That's one of the great things about team challenges. We get to learn about other countries. :)

It's 1:30 AM for me when the shelf is called. So, yeah definitely sleeping. :)

33903 Now this is an awesome Goodreads hack. I know I will be using it a lot. Thanks. :)

33903 Yay for our first stamp!

Georgina is one of the series I am thinking about reading right now. I like succubus as MCs, they have some nice moral dilemmas. And I have read other books by Richelle Mead and loved them in general.
I am not sure if the things that bothered you will bother me too Cheri. I will just have to try it and see.

Yeah. I wanted to give it a shot since it's first non-romance book of this type I have read. But as you said...
Lucky for me, the series continues as normal books. :)

33903 Week 1: Aliens
Zoe's Tale (Old Man's War, #4) by John Scalzi
Book: Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi
Date read: 28. Mar. 2016.
Rating: 2.4 stars

Zoe's Tale is not a new story. It's a companion novel to the The Last Colony or to put it plainly: it's the same events told from different point of view.
I never liked this parallel-novel trend, they were always too similar to original and mostly boring. But I love John Scalzi's writing, so I decided to give it a shot.

Likes:
+ Zoe's sarcastic flare copy/pasted from John Perry is in full assault mode trough the whole book. I enjoyed her verbal sparring.
+ Completelly focused on Zoe and we really get to know her.
+ Hickory and Dickory get a lot of prime time too. I like them and scenes with them were favorite in this book.

Dislikes:
- It's obvious John Scalzi tried to not just simply retell the story. But except for a couple of chapters, nothing new (aka. we didn't already know) happened.
- Mostly boring. Previous books were centered around military character that lead life full of actions. Zoe's teenage problems were sedate and ... boring by comparison.
- There are big skips in plot. It's not possible to follow the events in Zoe's Tale if you haven't read the previous books in series. It's not written as replacement or alternative to The Last Colony, more like an add-on.
- Zoe and her best friend Gretchen feel unrealistically mature for 15-year-olds. Especially in wit and sarcasm.

Companion novels are definitely not my thing. John Scalzi's trademark humor was as good as always but Zoe's Tale was a pointless tale that didn't add much to the plot of the story. I wish I just skipped it and continued with the next book in series.

I have read Master of Crows and it didn't suit me as much as Radiance. It was just OK. I think I would have liked it more if I have read it first...

33903 Another member of 'Radiance' fan club. I'm so glad so you loved it too Cheri. And I hope you will too Skandia (whenever you find time to read it). :)
