A girl stepped forth from the shadows, a brown satchel clutched in her arms. "Catrina. I'm sorry. I-I..." She didn't finish because, in the next moment, a gunshot silenced her forever.

Shana rolled her eyes. "Do you two really have to bicker like this?"
Kalrik turned. "Run Shana. Leave."
"Don't you dare move," Galrick threatened.
"Just start walking."
"Don't MOVE."
Shana stopped and sighed. "Look. Whatever is going on here needs to stop. It's not like you can hit him anyway. I've tried."

Galrick watched as Shana hauled the bodies one-by-one behind the counter.
Shana went to grab the fourth officer's hand and stopped, realizing she still had a chance. 'If I scream...' She opened her mouth wide, sucking in a large amount of air, when suddenly Kalrik stood before her, his black cloak trailing to the floor. Instantly, her mouth snapped shut.
Galrick's eyes widened and something flashed in them - anger, maybe? "You," he growled, starting towards Kalrik.
Kalrik snickered. "Trying to ruin another little one?" he asked his former apprentice, his face shadowed.
"Not as bad as you did."
"Look who's talking."
"Why did you come back?"
"Why do you think?"
"Stop answering my questions with questions."
"What's wrong?"
"What do you mean 'what's wrong'?"
"Why did you choose the path you did?"
"Why do you think?"
"Because I mistakenly thought that you were good inside." At that, Kalrik's head lifted, yet his face was still shadowed. "I gave you everything, and you tossed it away."
Galrick scuffed. "'Gave me everything'? You call taking my true power away 'giving me everything'?!"
"I didn't take your power away," Kalrik answered, warning in his tone. "You took it away yourself."
Galrick's hands clenched into fists. "Leave, you bastard."
"I'll never leave."
And, suddenly, there was something in his eyes. A boyish glow that never died. "You promised."
"I lied."
"I thought you never lied."
"Maybe that was a lie."

Galrick raised an eyebrow. "Now, now girls. You'll have plenty of time to sort this out while you help me hide these bodies.

Catrina pushed lightly on the door, watching as it fell to the floor with a thud. "Hello?" she called out into the black abyss, cupping her hands around her mouth to project her voice further. "Is anyone here?!"

Galrick shook his head. "Well isn't this nice? Two tigers and one lamb. I don't like this outcome."

'YOU STUPID, STUPID, STUPID GIRL!!!' Shana screamed mentally, ducking farther into the shadows. 'You don't GIVE AWAY WHERE YOUR PARTNER IS. Now we have no hope of rescue - either of us.' Shana took a step back through the crack in the wall, a loud crack reverberating off the walls. Shutting her eyes closed and whispering all sorts of profanity, she made a run for the door.
Galrick called after her, growling after she stayed on-corse for the door. 'If that's how you want to play...' He focused his energy on Shana, causing her to stop unwillingly in her tracks.
Shana cursed under her breath.
"I thought we should play some more," he explained, forcing her to turn around and walk towards him. Her steps were rigid, unwilling, like an old puppet. When finally he released her at his feet, she was gasping for air. "Leaving your friend just like that? Tsk, tsk. You two should apologize."

'Is he THREATENING us?' Shana thought, disbelief prominent on her face. 'BLACKMAILING us? Just WHO does he think he IS?'

Catrina snuck through the hole in the barbed wire fence. 'You know...for going through the trouble of putting a fence up, a lot of good it's doing for them.' She took in the massive building standing before her: its cracked windows, worn brick, and rusted tin roof. "Meet me at the abandoned building at Summer Street, and I'll tell you the truth." Sighing, Catrina trudged forward, unaware of what lied beyond the wrecked door.

Galrick grinned wickedly. 'Everything' he signed back.

"I must say," Galrick began, his face a mixture of giddy, evil, plotting and passive amusement. "That was quite the feat you just accomplished."

"Shana," the voice whispered, the butterfly emerging with orange and red and black wings: a monarch.
"Yes," Kalrik answered, his voice low as he peeled back his hood, revealing a face full of scars that shimmered in the early morning light of the fields. "I've watched her."
"How is she?" the butterfly asked, hope in its voice - the voice of a woman.
"She is getting along fine. Soon, though, her powers will be revealed."
Silence fell over the two of them.
"That's okay," the insect whispered. "At least she knows."
