'shuggie bain' tanned. can i see why it won the booker? yes, it's very well written, an accurate picture of the times, but, no, it's no kelman! to my mind, the book should have been titled 'agnes bain', because the mother and her drink issues are the central issues, i don't think the book quite gets under shuggie's skin, could have done with more of what he was thinking. but hey - good book, especially considering it's a debut.

yeah, i noticed the removal of review comments when i checked to see if sera had responded to my reply to his original comment on my review of 'herzelied xxv' (it's easy to find - top review in the listing - jeez, i'm good!)

it just kinda sterilises things further, but as you say, suzy, some of the comments were better reading than the reviews - of course, not mine!!!!!

that's very true.

innaresting that you can't 'stomach' 'ghosteen', it affects me in the same way. not a reaction from the ears or the mind, but a churning anxiety in my gut that says i will never want to hear it again. it's so much more than just a duff album (which of course he is entitled to), but is a colossal floating virus.

val - about 1/3 thru' 'shuggie bain', and i would tell you to go for it. the dismal subject matters are beautifully outlined and the prose is quite delicate (out of kilter with the contents, but very suitably so!). it doesn't, however, have the rawness of a kelman - i'm thinking of the comparable 'kieron smith, boy' (also centred on a child growing up in povertyville, scotland), and would have to say kelman's is a better book, but this is pretty aspirational in the right direction. yeah, knock y'sel oot!

sorry, but i find their insipid brand of reggae-lite theft to be quite unpalatable.
