you've no idea the number of ladybugs we encountered when removing the fabric from the gazebo, within the folds and pockets - an estimate would be maybe as high as 80 of varying sizes. this considerably slowed down the process, as for some long forgotten superstition, i (we) won't harm a ladybug, taking the fabric to a different part of the garden to coax the bugs safely off before washing (the fabric, not the ladybugs - not one carcass was found in the washing machine afterward). luckily b.z. was elsewhere at the time, as he would have had a field day. never seen as many in the same place before (and, yes, had we known they were there would have postponed the exercise).

i could give you the number of the semi-legendary 'pat the plumber' - send him a text and he's at your door by the time you put your phone down (he's not even from the same town!), 'aye, i was just passing, thought i'd drop in and see what you're looking for'.
we employed him and (the more than legendary half of the morecambe and wise of the trade) iain the jiner, to install our kitchen and bathroom - the water in your kettle will never cool down!!!

Jackie Leven? Is It Folk?
my original thought for this was to review with only 3 words, 'about ******* time!' but no, that wouldn't do anyone justice and would only illustrate my frustration at the world's general indifference toward one of the finest singers/writers to have walked (and walked) the planet. if you know me personally you will have been subject to rants centred around doll by doll being owners of the most devastatingly lethal live show, or the fact that big jackie should have been/is up there with the good and great! but, that's me..........and a core of others including the people who have come together to make jackie's genius a 'thing'.
now, i was going to buy this whatever, wouldn't have bothered me if it had been rotten............but it's very not! the love and respect from his peers is palpable, right through from ralph mctell's beautiful 'sick harbour lament' to the membranes' brutal and fractured reading of 'more than human' - 'tribute' is probably too small a word! it's all so good and appropriate that i wasn't going to pick a winner, but step forward tom robinson - his take on the brilliant 'classic northern diversions' engenders the same 'goosepimple effect' as does jackie's original every time i hear it! would it be churlish of me (especially given what a magnificent catalogue to pick songs from) to wonder why no-one thought to version 'call mother a lonely field'? mibbe! i am glad, however, that doll by doll songs are included - i'll spare you my usual rant!
i'd say if you've any regard for jackie and the dolls, simply, buy this and enjoy the respectful and heartfelt interpretations - if you've not encountered him before, still, buy this, and then get on track with follow up purchases from his back catalogue (all still in print), starting with 'fairy tales for hard men', and then pick and choose as you will, there are no disappointments!
i could go on for hours on the merits of jackie leven, suffice to say 'jackie leven? folking right it is!'

i completely forgot all about this - what a wasted opportunity for a bit of slander and disrespect! i honestly would (i've seen them live y'know!) have nominated 'sweet caroline', but hey ho!

after a couple of technical issues, the pere ubu livestream was excellent. first song kinda rough, but things kicked off big style with the next 'slow walking daddy' and thereon, a huge highlight being 'dark' - pere ubu tonight were keith moline on guitar, gagarin on digital electronics and david thomas on vocals cigarettes (well, it was his own living room!) and wine, and not being slow to give the others a swearing for not simplifying things. an hour or so in total, songs from the above newly remixed albums plus one that thomas wrote for kylie (or says he did!). actually awesome in places.
