208213 I read 2 books that fit the challenge this month! These Old Shades, by Georgette Heyer, which is a romance set in the 18th century, very fun; and The Devotion of Suspect X, by Keigo Higashino, a jaw-dropping mystery/thriller! Loved them both!

Hmm, yes, having seen the film, I know that Fantastic Beasts (the screenplay) would fit the theme. But I don't know anything about TCC.

208213 Marlene, I read the beginning to Newt's Emerald a while ago and thought the same thing, it really wasn't all that in terms of writing. But I just happened to pick up Sabriel yesterday and it's totally different. The writing IS good, I totally get where the praise comes from. I guess Newt's just isn't the best place to start with Garth Nix

Yeah, I think it's ok for the theme. (and I'm in the love it camp)
208213 Here to recommend These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer to romance fans this month - it's a lot of fun!!

208213 Posting this early this time!

Let us know how your reading went this month, if you had trouble completing this month's task, if you enjoyed the book you read and whether you'd recommend it!

208213 If you want to make this month a little bit more challenging, a good idea would be to ONLY read books by women authors whom you have never read anything by!

You can pick classic authors, you can go for up-and-coming contemporary authors, you can read only WOC, there are many ways to make this month's challenge your own! We hope you enjoy it!

208213 Oh boy I flunked my April challenge. Picked up Stories of Your Life and was stumped on the very first story, it was a whole thing about Babylonian cosmology and I had to look up articles on Wikipedia to understand what the hell was going on!!! Very difficult.

And then I couldn't decided what else to pick up. Now May has started and since I have already read my May book, I have lots of time to catch up with April.

Hopefully you all had better luck than me this month!

208213 I think I will read The Count of Monte Cristo for this one! Alyssa, if you have a kindle (or a kindle app on your iPad, say), I'm pretty sure you can download it for free if that were your pick.

I remember someone on ONTD recommended The Art of the Con: The Most Notorious Fakes, Frauds, and Forgeries in the Art World for this month, it looks very interesting!!

This is a bit of a tricky theme so if anyone has suggestions, do share them!

The Martian is a pretty quick read, it's very fast-paced, you can probably read it in a weekend if you have a bit of free time

208213 Yeah, that was one of the Reese Witherspoon recs!
208213 I'm going to be travelling a lot this month so I'm only going to commit to one book (probably Stories of Your Life).

208213 I learned my lesson not to be overly ambitious with my reading challenge. I ended up having a very busy month and I only read one book recommended by a celeb, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. It was alright, not exactly groundbreaking.

But I do still intend to read a few more celeb-recommended books this year, like The Dry.
208213 Rochelle, thank you for that wonderful commentary!

I agree that his definition of the elements of racism is very interesting, I think it works very well. When he mentioned the conversion aspect, I was reminded that I have a book at home called A Suitable Enemy, by Liz Fekete, which I haven't read yet, but is supposed to talk about "xeno-racism", linking racism to islamophobia and anti-imigration sentiment. It'll be interesting to contrast both author's ideas.

I still have a little bit left on this book though!

208213 Politicians don't count as celebs for the purposes of the challenge, but you're fine - Oprah has also recommended The Underground Railroad
