I read Vonnegut's -Cat's Cradle- for my bookclub. Enough of it takes places on an island that I'm counting it.(I could count -The Martian-, which I've used for two other topics.)
I'm double-counting The Martian for this one, though will replace it with another when I come across one.
There were no books I was assigned but did read, but I know many people who read All Quiet on the Western Front during their schooling and this was the first time for me.
I love all of Christina Henry's work and her take on Little Red Riding Hood (The Girl in Red) is no exception.
I read The Mermaid which I've decided counts. There is a prominent fisherman/fishing aspect early in the book with enough references back to it that it meets my criteria for this topic.
Late joining - need to see what I've already read this year that qualifies. (I've removed some entries, like "a book you hated" because I'm 100% not interested in forcing myself through something like that.)[ ] A book that unleashes your creativity

I finished Verity earlier, which is primarily set in Vermont. It's a murder mystery of sorts, not my usual genre, but there is a touch of conceptual twist. Not great, not horrible.
