SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Hurricane Maria grew into a Category 3 storm on Monday as it barreled toward a potentially devastating collision with islands in the eastern Caribbean. Forecasters warned it was likely to grow even stronger.
The storm was on a path that would take it near many of the islands already wrecked by Hurricane Irma and then on toward Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Maria could hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane, said Ernesto Morales with the U.S. National Weather Service in San Juan.

Overnight update. Jose losing some punch. Will still impact NE coastal areas with TS Watches up. Small west shift could impact more. Maria strengthening with impacts to Leeward Islands/VI/PR likely. Major Hurricane nearing PR Tue into Wed this week. Models trend a bend after nearing the eastern Bahamas. Interaction with Jose is still the reason... as he slows and bends back south he opens the door for her north. Fujiwhara effect is still an option which is when two systems meet... and the larger absorbs the weaker or they just dance around each other. Florida looking less likely each model run. Still would be watching though... as should anyone in the eastern states from FL north. Not worrying mainland USA... just watching. I will go live at 9am to chat some more.

Only 3 times before have 2 hurricanes tracked w/in 75 mi. of the Virgin Isl. in the same season: 1999, 1916, 1852. Never 2 Cat 3+.
And you don't think something isn't going on with the climate???!

Maria will continue to intensify over the next few days, probably reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or greater) by late Tuesday. By that point, the storm will be on the doorstep of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. At Maria’s current forecast intensity and path through the Virgin Islands, it would mark the first time that two major hurricanes have passed so close to the island chain in the same season.

Tropical storm watches will probably be issued along parts of the East Coast later today, especially along the New England coast, where Jose is expected to make its closest pass to the U.S. mainland on Wednesday morning. The NHC notes in its key messages that “any deviation to the left of the NHC forecast track would increase the likelihood and magnitude of those impacts. Interests along the U.S. east coast from Virginia to New England should monitor the progress of Jose through the next several days.”

Jose being tricky. HH might have found Cat 2 winds and lower pressure. Slight wobble west puts east coast more in play with effects (large expanding system with bands extending way past center). Where Jose goes looks to be the main player where Maria goes.
