Some people just refuse to rate anything high. To them 5 is perfect and nothing can be perfect.
I think Carole is on to something in saying that some reviewers use snarky or "funny" reviews to build their own following. Best we can do is try to brush them off and remember even the classics get a ton of 1 star ratings.

I'm sorry but how is Gone Girl 1 star!? That book was awesome!!

If a reader isn't even going to read the book they really shouldn't leave a review. That's just wrong!

Don't hold me to it...but I think you just click the other reviews as helpful and then they show first :)

If you're not going to tell the world, I will.

Awesome Marie!!! Good luck with the rest of the day :)

Doesn't that seem bizarre? Where's the prestige if you're paying? Shouldn't books be awarded for their quality and according to the size of the author's wallet?

In researching some potential awards I've been shocked to find that a lot of awards require the author to pay up front for a chance at nomination. Maybe I'm naïve but...is this really how the industry works?
Speaking as a reader for a moment; when I see a seal for an award on a book cover it's impressive but when I then realize that the nomination is "paid for" the seal loses a ton of appeal.
Is it just me?
