189072 Quinty (Taylor's Version) nominated The Diary of a Young Girl in the before 1960 thread. They also have the support of JoJo_theDoDo over there.

They already nominated another book here, so I nominate it.

189072 I second the Invisible Man.

189072 Well, it has been in the public domain for some time. Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne, 161 pages.

189072 My recommendation is don't start with Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns. The first, is a deconstruction and it would be like having your first slasher be Scream. The second, is a dark reimagining that poured itself everywhere, what made it special at the time has been diluted by a hundred copycats.

You are starting so self contained would be the best way to not get overwhelmed. Also, something that give you most of the pieces.
Thumbs up on Emily Carroll, everybody should enjoy a good scare.

For non fiction:
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic
The Complete Persepolis
Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me
The Complete Maus

Fiction:
Nimona
Harleen
Pulp
When the Wind Blows
Superman Smashes the Klan
Thor: The Mighty Avenger - The Complete Collection

189072 Maybe some comics might be to their liking:

Non-fiction:
The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It's already divided in four books.
There is also the March Trilogy by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
Almost American Girl by Robin Ha.
Smile, Sisters or Guts by Raina Telgemeier.

189072 I found The Queen's Gambit pretty okay. I don't know more than the basics of Chess (the name of the pieces and what they do), maybe if I knew more about the game a could have appreciated it more. However, I was surprised by how tense the matches could be. Thank you, Jojo.

Okay, no fantasy or science fiction. Well, A Study in Scarlet is my suggestion. It's never to late to start with Sherlock Holmes. It may not be the best one, but it must be read to be believed.
189072 The first I can think of is Neverwhere by Neil Gainman.

If I remember something else with all the specification I will let you know.

189072 Okay, I think I will keep you in science fiction with A Wrinkle in Time. It's a fast read and will make anybody fuzzy inside. Sorry, it's the only other book besides Beloved and Jane Eyre I can vouch for. And, I think you might want a break from the horrors of at least one book.

I will be waiting for your recommendation.

189072 JoJo_theDoDo, thank you. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was hard to put down and also help with the Calendar Challenge.

Also, I would like to recomend Frankenstein: The 1818 Text. It's a classic and one never gets to see it adapted well. However, some reimaginings are good as their own thing.

If memory doesn't fail me Louisa May Alcott wrote to support her family. However, she had to separate brands, on one side Little Women and adyacente works, on the other more darker work under a pen name.

Edit: I forgot the focus was in English writers.
189072 I second Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistlestop Cafe and The Time Traveller's Wife.

189072 Tony, for you I chose Watership Down by Richard Adams. It's what I would call a rite of passage.

Leslie Ann, thank you. Rosemary's Baby was quite mortifying.
189072 I nominate Middlemarch by George Eliot, 904 pages.
Also, I second Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.
189072 I second Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, Blindness and Kindred.

189072 I second Persuasion and The War of the Worlds.

It can happen to anybody. The Bookshelf is a little long at this point. I always have to triple check the thing.

Mexico, The Dunwich Horror, Feb 28, 73 pages.
Mexico, Blood Is Another Word for Hunger, Feb 28, 25 pages.

Total 130
