First, I am going to say that I hate this book. I tried reading at a teen and could not connect with Holden in anyway. In the few chapters I read as a teen, I remember thinking 'good God, do boys really think this way about girls". I can even remember going on my first few first dates with Holden's words echoing in my head.

Rereading it with this group as an adult only further depresses me to see a young man so jaded and unhappy. I find it affirming my belief that some people just don't know how to be happy, which is depressing (see what I did there).

As a teacher I would be nervous about teaching this novel. Especially when teens describe the talk of suicide being so present that it is becoming background noise.

There is just no relief in this novel. Even at the end, I am saddened and have little faith that he is getting the help he needs.
