Don't think it's what you're looking for, but James Patterson also has a story that has two different story lines. First book is just a duo. Second set is a series with the same characters as the first, from the same original situation, but whole new storyline. First books MA15+, second set are PG13.

The Causal Enchantment Series

I've always shied away from Sci-fi for some reason. I think it's all the completely made up words and beyond bizarre names. But then I hate the ones that exchange known words for similar too... Stim or caff for coffee. My brain starts screaming at me to check if a teenager wrote it :/. I have less problems with most fantasy tho for some reason. I find if the characters and story aren't strong enough to grab me and distract me from the 'inventive phrasing', then there's no hope.
The 3013: is good. The first one is probably the hardest 'to get through' in terms of erotica ott. Have you ever changed from a big computer screen down to a little one...? I find myself leaning closer and trying 'to see around the edges' to the rest of the page I can't see. It's similar with these books at times, I'm trying to see around the sex to get back to the story!

And there is a series with multiple authors that you can search for by using '3013:', it is actually erotica, but in this instance the 'I read the playboy mag for the articles' actually fits. The stories and characters are pretty good, and quite often the sex is just in the way, so it's easy to skim/skip.

SIB doesn't bother to take care of anything boring, even breaking up with her own boyfriends, so KCDm takes it on herself to put them out of their misery... Only this time it backfires when he's super pushy and doesn't back off when convincing her they really do need to get on the plane for his family vacation now! KCDm caves with the intention of forcing SIB to come and take her place... but SIB refuses, so she's stuck on a family holiday with people she doesn't know, who don't like her (his mum), and a boyfriend she's never met.
Oh, there's My Fair Lily, again, not good v bad. And the switching is just a side plot.

Spoiler format is < spoiler > and < /spoiler > to close, without the spaces between the < & >. click on the (some HTML is ok) bit at the top of the comment box for info

From memory, it was US based, but not sure if there was a specific mention of town/country to clarify that or if it was just 'a given'.
Def only one little boy that the H had taken when his brother died. Pretty sure there was another brother that was helping to work the ranch... Don't think he was living in the house tho. May have been living in workers quarters or somewhere else entirely.
Def not any kind of mail order bride situation, just think he connected when they met.
I think the H & boy lived on the ground floor of the house and the h & sister took upstairs rooms. Have a memory of the h having access to 'back stairs' that either went directly into the kids room, or just near the door. The kid might have had nightmares and think the H stumbled in on her with the kid after she'd rushed down to him in minimal nightwear.
Also, there may or may not have been phone calls to to either the house or the sisters mobile that the h was concerned about. Either hang ups or very evasive answers from the sister when questioned. Think she thought it was a boyfriend maybe, but is was (view spoiler)
Pretty sure that they sneak about for a bit when they eventually hook up, and there may be a conversation about the h being worried about the sister feeling left behind or left out if she were to move into the H's room and leave her upstairs by herself.
