I’ve read one like this. I don’t remember your ‘near miss’, but the one that pops to mind was when they were both at an art show. They’d both walked into a room with other audiences members, and then the lights go out. The art piece is to hi-jack their senses with sound or the like and makes the audience think they are standing in a field or outside etc. If it sound familiar I’ll have a hunt. I couldn’t find it on a quick look.

Definitely not The Plot for my one. Sounds interesting tho. I’d say I read it likely somewhere between 2012-17? That’s a guess tho, could have been the decade prior too. Likely an ebook, but not for sure.
I think the setting was older modern. Maybe 70’s to 90’s? Definitely pre technology type. If there was technology, it would have been ‘fax machine’, but I don’t remember anything specific.
Think they or some of them were well off. Have an image in my head of old school bold and the beautiful, posh houses, flowy dresses, ‘throw away’ attitude to holidays.
Pretty sure the main guy (faker), the bad guy (writer/attacker, and the dead woman were all close when they were young. It’s not set in that time, but flashes back to explain. It’s set about 20 or so years after they were young and the bad guy raped(?) the dead woman. She later committed suicide I think. Possibly the dead woman and the main guy were together before she was attacked and changed.
The bad guy decided to write about his attack on her and around their life. Think that’s when the main guy figures out what happened, and decided to put the fake book plan in place. He goes all out. Travelling to get old paper and ink. Right bindings and glues for the times, everything. He scatters several books around places, but the cherry on top is the fake book tucked away in the bad guys library, so even he’s confused about how someone could have written his attack, to the detail, years before he did it.
The main guy is also attracted/involved with the much younger daughter of the dead woman. Not sure if she’s a new comer from some kind of adoption? She might actually be the bad guys kid from the attack, but not sure. But there’s tension there about the main guy going for revenge or just living life with her. Can’t remember how that played out.
Sorry, supa long.

I’ve been looking for this one too. The friend faked an ‘older book’ because the writer used his attack/rape (?) of their female friend years before as the plot. No one knew about it, and the female friend suicided because of it (?), so he used it.
Think theres a romantic link between the (dead/suicide?) female friends now grown daughter and the friend who faked the book to screw over the writer.
Relentless series by Karen Lynch. Keep wishing for more, but she’s said it’s done and moved on. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Alice Hoffman has several. Here’s the link to practical magic. The night bird is good too. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

The Burnout series is an ex seals team, some of whom have ptsd from war or life. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
Archangels Shadows. Ash is tall. Almost certain she’s over six feet, but again, can’t find the description. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Archangel Down. I’m 99% sure Noa is over six feet, but I can’t find the description atm. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
3013: Series. It’s erotic romance, and does have aliens all over the place, but genetic modification has made most of the human women (and men) into tall sex bombs. The world and stories are good for the first 10 or so books, if you can deal with the sex. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Lizzie Grace series. Lizzie’s BFF, Belle is tall. She’s not a main focus, but she does have story. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Neanderthal seeks human. The lead female in the first couple of books is def tall, possibly one of the other leads later, but can’t remember that being a big thing if they were. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
