Father is estranged from still living mother due to his stance not to fight in Vietnam. He moved to Canada to avoid draft after brother died in the war and his parents said shitty things. They have had no contact since. Grown daughter now main character.
h has moved to town to provide stability for niece(?) who’s just lost parents(?)
Her boyfriend’s not happy.
h is some kind of museum curator and helps the local museum revamp
Local ghost stories about French prisoners of war causing local family trouble (might be h’s family, but might not)
There is a ghost haunting the area, and the museum rebuild
The grandmother is head of the town museum group and there’s all sorts of tension and ignoring.
Having more details if needed, just can’t find the book!
Thanks for looking.

Read: last 5 years or so
Format: likely iBook
Series: almost certainly
Standard, Duke/Lord.
Lord has a ‘man’ who is his right hand and very trusted (non sexual)
Pretty sure the ‘man’ is Lords half brother from their asshole father, and they both know it.
There are lots of half siblings, and the Lord track them all and sets up / helps / looks after them like his father should have.
He may have started this as a child when he stumbled across the ‘man’ in the village as a child only a bit older then him and insisted he live with them.
Can’t remember much about any of the other characters or story.
The aunts a bit of a harpy spinster. She isn’t a huge part of the story from memory, but the Lord does get to know her better and understand who she is.

If it sound familiar I’ll have a hunt. I couldn’t find it on a quick look.

I’d say I read it likely somewhere between 2012-17? That’s a guess tho, could have been the decade prior too. Likely an ebook, but not for sure.
I think the setting was older modern. Maybe 70’s to 90’s? Definitely pre technology type. If there was technology, it would have been ‘fax machine’, but I don’t remember anything specific.
Think they or some of them were well off. Have an image in my head of old school bold and the beautiful, posh houses, flowy dresses, ‘throw away’ attitude to holidays.
Pretty sure the main guy (faker), the bad guy (writer/attacker, and the dead woman were all close when they were young. It’s not set in that time, but flashes back to explain. It’s set about 20 or so years after they were young and the bad guy raped(?) the dead woman. She later committed suicide I think. Possibly the dead woman and the main guy were together before she was attacked and changed.
The bad guy decided to write about his attack on her and around their life. Think that’s when the main guy figures out what happened, and decided to put the fake book plan in place. He goes all out. Travelling to get old paper and ink. Right bindings and glues for the times, everything. He scatters several books around places, but the cherry on top is the fake book tucked away in the bad guys library, so even he’s confused about how someone could have written his attack, to the detail, years before he did it.
The main guy is also attracted/involved with the much younger daughter of the dead woman. Not sure if she’s a new comer from some kind of adoption? She might actually be the bad guys kid from the attack, but not sure. But there’s tension there about the main guy going for revenge or just living life with her. Can’t remember how that played out.
Sorry, supa long.

The friend faked an ‘older book’ because the writer used his attack/rape (?) of their female friend years before as the plot. No one knew about it, and the female friend suicided because of it (?), so he used it.
Think theres a romantic link between the (dead/suicide?) female friends now grown daughter and the friend who faked the book to screw over the writer.
