Set in America, small town

- H is a rockstar who has to come back to town - he doesn’t want to
- his mum was an addict. She and her boyfriends were at best neglectful, but sometimes abusive
- think he’s back to build his sober mum a house, but she’s causing problems to make him come back so she can make amends or tell him the truth
- the town knew he was neglected and abused and apparently had a meeting to decided he was better off being neglected in their town, rather than calling social services and having him possibly neglected in another town.
- there was a time he was attacked by a bear because he’d had to sleep in the cold to keep safe from mum & co
- one of the adults proudly reminds the H of the time he caught him trying to steal something to eat and he chased the little H out and scared the life out of him… isn’t the H happy he was starving then, but still learnt not to steal
- several boys in school were brothers and the in crowd who made his life outside home hell too

SPOILERS



- the H finds out who his dad is. A well known and probably rich town leader… and the father of the boys who tormented him in school.
- the H’s band come to town to support him

Do you remember what country or city/town it was set in?

The h is called back to her fathers hometown.
Father is estranged from still living mother due to his stance not to fight in Vietnam. He moved to Canada to avoid draft after brother died in the war and his parents said shitty things. They have had no contact since. Grown daughter now main character.

h has moved to town to provide stability for niece(?) who’s just lost parents(?)

Her boyfriend’s not happy.

h is some kind of museum curator and helps the local museum revamp

Local ghost stories about French prisoners of war causing local family trouble (might be h’s family, but might not)

There is a ghost haunting the area, and the museum rebuild

The grandmother is head of the town museum group and there’s all sorts of tension and ignoring.

Having more details if needed, just can’t find the book!

Standard, Duke/Lord.
Lord has a ‘man’ who is his right hand and very trusted (non sexual)
Pretty sure the ‘man’ is Lords half brother from their asshole father, and they both know it.
There are lots of half siblings, and the Lord track them all and sets up / helps / looks after them like his father should have.
He may have started this as a child when he stumbled across the ‘man’ in the village as a child only a bit older then him and insisted he live with them.
Can’t remember much about any of the other characters or story.

The aunts a bit of a harpy spinster. She isn’t a huge part of the story from memory, but the Lord does get to know her better and understand who she is.

The ‘man’ gets injured protecting the Lord(?), and the Aunty faints. It comes out near the end that the ‘man’ is her child with the father/old lord. The father had tricked/abused(?) her when she was younger to get dowery/connection etc, she found out and went away to have secret child after refusing to marry a villain like him. She returned a few years later and placed the ‘man/child’ with a foster in village when she could to keep him close. While she was away, the father had simply moved on to her younger sister and married to have the Lord. The ‘man’ always knew who he was and that he ‘should’ have been the Lord, being oldest and the mothers intended marriage, but he was loyal to the Lord. The Lord hadn’t known about the Aunty or the the ‘man’ was almost the legitimate lord. (hide spoiler)]
