185 Circle of Three Or Secret in the Stones or another of the Tales of the Nine Charms series by Erica Farber?
185 My Name is Su5an Smith, the 5 is Silent.
185 Can you narrow down when you read it? Early, mid, late 90s? Did it feel contemporary at the time or older?
185 Samuel Blink and the Forbidden Forest was, I believe, also published with under title Shadow Forest.
185 Oh wow, Kris, I hadn't thought of that at all because it's not YA, but yes, definitely possible:
Ordinary people by Judith Guest
185 Maybe Hex Hex (Hex, #1) by Rhiannon Lassiter
185 Hah! I had a devil of a time pulling it out of the old memory banks. I kept thinking Philippa Gregory and knew that was wrong!

Anyway, Leonardo's Swans by Karen Essex is another possibility. (though not Sarah Dunant, I just saw it as a suggestion on one of her pages)
185 Sarah Dunant was the first thing that came to mind: maybe In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant or The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant ?

Though there are probably dozens of possibilities. Anything to narrow it down would be helpful!

185 No worries, Cheryl, I've added LG. I've thought she'd make a good addition to our "mod squad" for some time now.

::ceremonial music::

I hereby confer upon thee, Lobstergirl, the sacred honor of WTNOTB Moderator Status. Something something great power, great responsibility...go forth and edit headers in a wise and just manner as ye see fit.

Welcome aboard.

185 Hmmm, maybe not, though. Some user reviews on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.ca/Danny-Margaret-S...

Don't seem to match your description. You may want to check into other titles published by Alyson Publications, a gay publisher that had some YA books in the early 80s, maybe late 70s.

185 Hmmm. Ok, one more guess, sticking with the Danny theme, since you mentioned the teacher: (although this was published in 1984, so maybe too late)

Danny has subject headings of:

Censorship -- Fiction.
Gay teenagers -- Fiction.
Teacher-student relationships -- Fiction.

185 I've come across a book titled "Danny Does" by Jerry Clark, published 1970, with subject headings of
"Gay men -- Sexual behavior -- Fiction" and "Gay erotic literature" but no plot details, but maybe?
185 You're welcome! I love those books. :)
185 Kiki Strike by Kirsten Miller?

Inside the Shadow City is the first
185 My pleasure! No, I haven't read it, and didn't Google it - but I have access to a couple of different databases, and years of practice searching them, as part of my job as a librarian. :)
185 No problem! I'm a librarian, so it's my job, and didn't take me that long at all. :)

Keeping my fingers crossed that Distraction is the right one - but if not I'll keep poking around!
185 Blade of the Poisoner, maybe?

"Jarral...falls in with three people of Talent: Archer, who is a giant woman of marvelous aim; Scythe, who appears blind but actually "sees" with supernatural accuracy; and Mandra, who can make forms seem to change."

The sequel is Master of Fiends
185 You're welcome! Happy to help. :)
