Roger Lancelyn Green wrote a number of myth retellings published from 1940s to 1970s.
In particular, Tales of the Greek Heroes: Retold From the Ancient Authors retells the Greek God creation myths (we're actually reading a new edition now). First published 1958.
"The mysterious and exciting legends of the gods and heroes in Ancient Greece, from the adventures of Perseus, the labours of Heracles, the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts, to Odysseus and the Trojan wars." http://books.google.com.au/books/abou...
He also has
- The Tale of Troy: Retold from the Ancient Authors
- Myths of the Norsemen: Retold from the Old Norse Poems and Tales
- Tales of Ancient Egypt

They are a good read and lend themselves to reading aloud. But they have that casual violence of little boys which some may not approve of.

Here are some well known convict-era books...
For the Term of His Natural Life by Marcus Clarke
The Secret River by Kate Grenville
Gould's Book of Fish: A Novel in Twelve Fish by Richard Flanagan
The Timeless Land by Eleanor Dark
The Fatal Shore: The Epic of Australia's Founding by Robert Hughes
Playmaker by Thomas Keneally

I was thinking more one of her illustrators might pop.
Okay - you're an Aussie so you would know Mem Fox... Sorry, I didn't check your profile.
You could also try this site - Children's Bestsellers of the 20th Century http://www.best-childrens-books.com/b...
Or here for illustrators: http://www.booksillustrated.com.au/bi...
Anyway, good luck on your search! This is going to be tricky with so little to go on.
