That sounds like Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Australian author Mem Fox and illustrator Julie Vivas. First published in 1984.

A beautiful book dealing with loss of memory.
185 Ashley wrote: " and the book cover isnt purple, its blue with a wolf on it."

Don't you just hate that? *grin*

Happy reading!
185 I actually have no idea but Undying Embrace by Jessica Lee has a purple cover: Undying Embrace (The Enclave, #2) by Jessica Lee (via google).

Good luck with your search.
185 Australian author John Marsden has a number of books written in diary/journal form and from the right era.

Jaclyn Moriarty Ashbury/Brookfield series is a bit later (post 2000) and her books are lighter but still use journal/email/diary etc to tell the tale.

Published too late? Cath Crowley's Graffiti Moon is 24 hours, 4 perspectives.
185 Maybe Lady Delafont's Dilemma by Donna Simpson. Not quite right because they chose to marry, but he left to travel the world and returns with his mistress.
185 Fairest of Them All by Teresa Medeiros? They first meet in a garden and he propositions her.
185 Animal Babies by Rebecca Dickinson and Lisa Bonforte?

Written in rhyming couplets, this link on ebay has some of the inside pages.
185 Excellent! Happy reading.
185 The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.

"Gestures are all that I have; sometimes they must be grand in nature. And while I occasionally step over the line and into the world of the melodramatic, it is what I must do in order to communicate clearly and effectively. In order to make my point understood without question. I have no words I can rely on because, much to my dismay, my tongue was designed long and flat and loose, and therefore, is a horribly ineffective tool for pushing food around my mouth while chewing, and an even less effective tool for making clever and complicated polysyllabic sounds that can be linked together to form sentences. And that’s why I’m here now waiting for Denny to come home—he should be here soon—lying on the cool tiles of the kitchen floor in a puddle of my own urine."

Sounds like the sort of book Hannah Howell writes.

You aren't thinking of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series? In particular, Menolly's story in the Harper Hall sub-series starting with Dragonsong.

In Hannah Howell's Highland Vow the Hero, Cormac, literally crawls (naked?) to Elspeth to demonstrate his love.
185 Maybe a Hannah Howell? MCs marry quickly in Highland Bride and consummation is unsatisfactory.

Lynsay Sands' The Deed has h promised to H by the king as well as a hasty consummation.
185 Night of the Phantom by Anne Stuart?
Published 1991.
Hero has a birthmark on his face.
One review I saw said "the implication that he might have contacted ladies in the sex industry to fulfill his needs".
