There's definitely a lack of options for her to confide in and get close to, in a small town like Lyme, I suppose. Is she afraid to move? Why does she keep torturing herself? Why does she want to continually throw her 'shame' in the faces of these 'narrow-minded' people? I am seeing it as a form of asserting herself, not being confined to the role that was laid out for her by society. She wants to be something more. Or at least different.
The one thing I can't figure out is, why him? Why Charles? He doesn't seem that open minded or anything. Is it just that he is a handsome man who paid her some attention, some genuine attention and considered her as a person foremost?
I am not sure as to her motivations as such. But this is the victorian time right? So, the fact that she slept with that French Lieutenant and freely admits to it (and chooses not to be a hypocrite) is pretty scandalous.
Delhi's been having some odd weather lately right? Isn't it? The rain in February and all. Something about it is just...oh who am I kidding, what I really want to ask is: where have you guys reached?
We do not have a Kolkata chapter yet, but if you or a fellow book lover wants to start one, the below link is something you should find useful. http://bringyourownbook.org/yourcity

There's an element of that. He feels like it is the right time and he happened upon a girl he liked more or less. She happens to be beautiful by the standards of their era. He thinks that he wants to settle down and so on.
I am also reserving judgement so far, because it is a bit early to tell. I do agree that they are very different people. I actually like his commentaries, they lend a different flavour to the book. It is set in the Victorian age, but with the narrator directly addressing the audience, it is a very modern take on the story.

I think he likes her because she is a bit different from the rest of the girls that he encountered in London. She gets his sense of humour and has is said to have a pretty dry sense of humour herself. While the other girls pretend to have an interest in his scientific pursuits, she has no qualms making fun of him for being obsessed with fossils.

Oh great, start posting your thoughts then? Avoiding spoilers hopefully. Are you finding it difficult to go on because you don't like it?
